Growing engagement of Turkey in the Middle East

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem rostoucí angažovanosti Turecka na Blízkém východě, a to za vlády politické strany AKP v letech 2002-2020. Pojednává o tureckých motivacích a nástrojích, které ovlivnily vývoj vzájemných vztahů s pěti zeměmi Blízkého východu, a to jmenovitě Íránu, Iráku, Sýrie a Saúdské Arábie. První kapitola popisuje motivace pro rostoucí angažovanost Turecka na Blízkém východě. Mezi ty patřila zejména změna směru zahraniční politiky, v rámci tzv. Doktríny strategické hloubky, kterou vytvořil Ahmet Davotoglu. Velkou roli ve vztahu k jiným zemím hrají také obavy o bezpečnost. V této oblasti hrají Kurdští separatisté významnou roli, a jsou jedním z důvodů, proč se Turecko vojensky angažuje v Sýrii a Iráku. Další velmi důležitou motivací je navázání hospodářské spolupráce se zeměmi Blízkého východu a zajištění ekonomické prosperity. Druhá kapitola pojednává o diplomatických, ekonomických a vojenských nástrojích, které Turecko používá k plnění svých motivací a k pokrytí bezpečnostních obav. Mediace hrála velmi významnou roli v rozvoji vzájemných vztahů s ostatními zeměmi Blízkého východu. Další důležitou roli hrála turecká zahraniční pomoc vůči válkou zničené Sýrii. Turecko má dostatek zkušeností, pokud jde o vojenská řešení, která jsou zásadní pro zachování jeho územní celistvosti a bezpečnosti. Různé vojenské operace v posledních letech jsou jasným důkazem toho, že Turecko je více než schopné tyto akce provádět. Poslední kapitola této práce mapuje vývoj tureckých vztahů s výše uvedenými pěti zeměmi. Tyto vztahy byly ovlivněny tureckými kroky v domácí a zahraniční politice v posledních letech, ale také událostmi jakými byly například arabské jaro a syrská občanská válka. Tato práce byla napsána jako případová studie.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is working with the theme of growing engagement of Turkey in the Middle East, during the reign of the political party AKP within the years 2002-2020. It is about the Turkish motivations and tools which are driving a development of mutual relationships with five middle eastern countries including Israel, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Saudi Arabia. The first chapter is describing motivations and reasons for a growing engagement of Turkey in the Middle East. Those reasons are mainly changes of foreign policy doctrine, called doctrine of strategic depth, which was created by Ahmet Davoto?lu. Also security concerns are playing huge role in the relationship towards other countries and mainly actions of Kurdish separatists. Under the various groups, but mostly PKK, they are one of the most influential reasons why is Turkey engaging in Syria and Iraq. Another very important motivation is the incentive towards economic cooperation with the middle eastern countries. The second chapter is about diplomatic, economic and military tools which is Turkey using to fulfil its motivations and cover security concerns. Mediation has played major in the development of mutual relationships with other middle eastern countries. Another huge role was also played by Turkish foreign aid towards war torn Syria. Turkey is no stranger in regards for the military solutions which are paramount to maintaining its territorial integrity and security. Various military operations in recent years are a clear proof that Turkey is more than capable of carrying those actions. Last chapter of this thesis is mapping a development of Turkish relations with five countries mentioned above. These relationships were affected by Turkish shifts in domestic and foreign policy in recent years, but also by events like the Arab spring and Syrian civil war. This thesis was written as a case study and it described and researched all those factors mentioned above.
