Sampling strategy for evaluation of plastics in river system

Abstract:

Správná volba místa odběru vzorků při hodnocení životního prostředí představuje jeden ze základních předpokladů, který je nezbytný pro správné vyhodnocení velikosti kontaminace a z toho plynoucích rizik. Cílem práce bylo navržení vhodné strategie vzorkování a tvorba plánu vzorkování pro studie zabývající se zkoumáním plastů v říčním prostředí. Jako lokalita pro výzkum byla zvolena řeka Svratka. Bylo odebráno 18 vzorků říčních sedimentů v místech předpokládané akumulace plastů. Na základě koncentrace plastů v dílčích vzorcích byla definována místa s jejich přednostní koncentrací a poté byla vypracována strategie pro jejich vzorkování. Jako hlavní výzkumné metody bylo využito zejména vizuálního zhodnocení daných lokalit na základě terénního pochůzkového šetření. Dosavadní výsledky ukazují, že k největšímu hromadění plastů v říčním prostředí dochází v místech zvýšené koncentrace obyvatel, přičemž plastový odpad je zachytáván při vysokých vodních stavech na vegetaci v rámci koryta i mimo něj v místech akumulace přelivových sedimentů, nikoliv v místech usazování fluviálních sedimentů.

Abstract:

The correct choice of sampling point in the environmental studies is one of the basic preconditions that is necessary for the correct assessment of the extent of contamination and the resulting risks. The aim of the work was to design a sampling strategy and create a sampling plan for studies evaluating plastics in river environment. The Svratka River was chosen as the location for the research. 18 samples of river sediments were collected at the places of presumed plastics accumulation. As the main research method, the visual evaluation of the given localities on the basis of the field survey was used. Based on the field evaluation and the real amount of plastics material in the river samples, the sites with their preferred concentration were defined and the sites of their increased incidence have been described. The presence of the same facts in places of increased occurrence of plastics was the key for the sampling strategy development. The results so far show that the largest accumulation of plastics in the river environment occurs in places of increased population concentration. Plastic waste accumulates during high water levels on vegetation inside and outside the riverbed, in overflow sediments not together with fluvial sediment.
