Adaptation of persons to communication changes due to primary progressive aphasia as a type of neurodegenerative dementia

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá způsoby adaptace a použití komunikačních strategií osob s primární progresivní afázií napříč jejími variantami. Práce je rozdělena na dvě teoretické a jednu výzkumnou kapitolu. První kapitola se zaměřuje na vymezení primární progresivní afázie v systému neurodegenerativního onemocnění a syndromu demence. Druhá kapitola představuje specifika komunikace osob s touto jazykovou demencí, charakteristiku jejích variant, dopadů a aktuální možnosti logopedické péče. Výzkumná část sestává z výběru a analýzy studií, které se tématům komunikace, adaptace a souvisejícím komunikačním strategiím a používání kompenzačních pomůcek osob s PPA věnovaly. Studie byly analyzovány pomocí kvalitativní metody výzkumu, konkrétně obsahovou analýzou dokumentů. Na základě této analýzy bylo v reakci na změny v komunikaci osob s PPA identifikováno celkem 14 komunikačních strategií. Osoby s PPA také využívaly kombinaci technických a netechnických kompenzačních pomůcek, přičemž nejčastěji se jednalo o psanou formu komunikace a mobilní zařízení. Faktory, na kterých ve volbě strategií i pomůcek záviselo, byly shledány fáze progrese, varianty PPA, poruchy pojmenování a zachování jiných funkčních schopností.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with ways of adaptation and use of communication strategies of people with primary progressive aphasia across its variants. The thesis is divided into two theoretical and one research chapter. The first chapter focuses on the definition of the primary progressive aphasia in the system of neurodegenerative disease and dementia syndrome. The second chapter presents the specifics of the communication persons with this language dementia, the characteristics of its variants, its impact and the current possibilities of speech therapy. The research part consists of a selection and analysis of studies that were dedicated to the topics of communication, adaptation and related communication strategies and the use of compensatory aids by persons with PPA. The studies were ana-lysed by using a qualitative research method, specifically by content analysis of documents. Based on this analysis, a total of 14 communication strategies were identified in response to changes in the communication of persons with PPA. People with PPA also used a combination of technical and nontechnical compensatory aids, with written communication and mobile devices being the most common. The factors on which the choice of strategies and aids depended were found to be stages of progression, PPA variants, naming impairments and preservation of other functional abilities.
