Corruption, football and mass media: The case of "Kretinsky's bag"

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis deals with a corruption scandal in Czech football, and with the relationship between corruption, football and mass media. The aim of this work is to describe, interpret and explain the media image of corruption scandal, which was unleashed by the Daniel Křetínský - the manager of a football team Sparta Praha, in September 2012, and that was named "Křetinsky‘s bag". On the basis of this cause I will try to highlight the broader context of media reporting on sports and football corruption and put this analysis into existing theories and concepts. Theoretical part of the thesis describes theories of corruption, process of creating media content and relationships between media, corruption and sport. The research part of the thesis focuses on the critical discursive analysis of journalistic texts published in the Czech media. Analyzed media are national daily serious and tabloids newspapers and selected journals. Articles for the analysis were selected from the period from 15th of September 2012, when the scandal began, until 31st of December 2014, when the case was closed and the media stopped writing stories. For the analysis 34 articles have been used. The method of qualitative research is based on theoretical concepts and procedures of critical discursive analysis from Norman Fairclough, namely on parts and processes of discourse analysis, description, interpretation and explanation, by which I will analyze selected articles.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zaoberá korupčnou kauzou v českom futbale, a vzťahom medzi korupciou, futbalom a masovými médiami. Cieľom tejto práce je popísať, interpretovať a vysvetliť mediálny obraz korupčnej aféry, ktorú rozpútal Daniel Křetínský v septembri roku 2012, a ktorá časom dostala pomenovanie „Křetínského taška“. Na základe tejto kauzy sa pokúsim poukázať na širší kontext mediálneho referovania o športovej a futbalovej korupcii a zasadiť túto analýzu do existujúcich teórií a konceptov. Teoretická časť práce popisuje teórie korupcie, tvorbu mediálneho obsahu, vzťahy medzi médiami, korupciou a športom. Výskumná časť sa zameriava na kritickú diskurzívnu analýzu publicistických názorových textov o kauze, uverejnených v českých médiách. Analyzovanými médiami sú celoštátne seriózne a bulvárne denníky a vybrané časopisy. Články boli vyberané z obdobia od 15. septembra 2012, kedy sa kauza začínala, do 31. decembra 2014, kedy bola kauza už uzavretá a v médiách sa o nej prestalo hovoriť. K analýze bolo použitých 34 článkov. Metóda kvalitatívneho výskumu vychádza z teoretických konceptov a postupov diskurzívnej analýzy Normana Fairclougha, konkrétne z jednotlivých častí a postupov kritickej diskurzívnej analýzy, deskripciu, interpretáciu a explanáciu, pomocou ktorých budem vybrané články.
