Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá pojmy důvěra, odvaha a láska v mnoha jejich podobách a způsoby, jakými se projevují v osudech či jednání literárních postav, jež ve svém románu „Mandolína kapitána Corelliho“ přivedl k životu anglický spisovatel Louis de Bernières (česky 2000). Práce představuje i protiklady těchto vlastností, čímž se snaží demaskovat působení zla a ještě více zdůraznit proměňující sílu dobra. Dalším cílem této práce je do jisté míry rozkrýt a dokázat skutečnost, že každý jednotlivec má díky zmíněným nenahraditelným lidským schopnostem možnost zvrátit vývoj situací, které se mohou zdát beznadějné a předem odsouzené ke zmaru. Tento záměr je podpořen postřehy, týkajícími se téhož fenoménu v životech literárních hrdinů, kteří se objevují v dalších citovaných dílech Louise de Bernièra, konkrétně v románech „Válka o zadnici dona Emmanuela“ (česky 2001), „Señor Vivo a drogový baron“ (česky 2002) a „Ptáci bez křídel“ (česky 2005).

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the concepts of hope, courage and love in many of its facets and with the ways in which these human characteristics are reflected in the fates, lives or behaviour of the literary heroes created by Louis de Bernières in his novel Captain Corelli’s Mandolin (1994). Besides that, it shows also the antitheses of these capacities in order to unmask the traps of evil and make the transforming power of good more transparent. Another aim of this work is to show and prove to a certain extent that any individual has – thanks to the mentioned human capacities – the power to influence situations which seem to be desperate and doomed to failure. This intention is further supported with several observations of the same phenomena in the life of heroes brought to life in other novels by Louis de Bernières – Birds Without Wings (2004), The War of Don Emmanuel’s Nether Parts (1990) and Señor Vivo and the Coca Lord (1991).
