Afterlife on Facebook: Online presence of the deceased and its impact on remembering them

Abstract:

This thesis concentrates on new forms of online presence after individual’s death and the ways they affect mourning, remembering the dead and the images of the dead in the survivors’ memories. A facebook profile of a deceased person represents the online grieving platforms in general, as all the relevant phenomena are present there. This text defines the concepts of identity, individual, collective and collected memory and the relations and bonds between them. After articulating the specifics of online mourning in comparison to more traditional ways of mourning, the thesis presents the outcomes of a qualitative research consisting of narrative interviews with the mourners and the analysis of the deceased’s facebook profiles’ content. The research outcomes are used to illustrate the relevant phenomena. Author is trying to deepen the understanding of the collective mourning and remembering activities on Facebook and their impact on post mortem representations of the deceased in the memory of their survivors. Among other things, survivors come to the profile to make sure the deceased really existed. They keep him alive in their individual memories, but also shape the dominant image of him through sharing specific memories in the process of their democratization. Some go to the profile to read new information about the deceased and shape his image in the memory by adopting unknown memories and creating new ones. All these activities result in changes in the collected memory, which are reflected in the individual and collective memories.

Abstract:

Text sa zameriava na nové formy posmrtnej prítomnosti v online prostredí a to, ako ovplyvňujú trúchlenie, spomínanie na zosnulých a ich obrazy v pamätiach pozostalých. Ako zástupná platforma pre online trúchlenie v práci figuruje facebookový profil zosnulého, na ktorom sa všetky relevantné javy odohrávajú. V texte sú definované pojmy identity, individuálnej, kolektívnej a zhromaždenej pamäti a vzájomné vzťahy medzi nimi. I na základe pomenovania špecifík trúchlenia v online prostredí potom text prezentuje výsledky kvalitatívneho výskumu, ktorý pozostával z naratívnych rozhovorov s trúchliacimi a analýzy obsahu profilov zosnulých. Výsledky výskumu sú použité ako ilustrácia popisovaných fenoménov. Na základe výskumu sa autor snaží prehĺbiť porozumenie k tomu, prečo vôbec pozostalí na profiloch zosnulých kolektívne spomínajú a aký má táto činnosť vplyv na posmrtnú reprezentáciu zosnulého v pamäti pozostalých. Pozostalí prichádzajú na profil okrem iného uisťovať sa o tom, že mŕtvy človek skutočne existoval. Udržujú ho pri živote vo svojej individuálnej pamäti, ale i formujú dominantný obraz o ňom zdieľaním špecifických spomienok v rámci procesu ich demokratizácie. Niektorí chodia na profil, aby si prečítali nové informácie o zosnulom a formovali si jeho obraz vo svojej pamäti prijímaním a vytváraním nových spomienok. Všetky tieto činnosti majú za následok zmeny v zhromaždenej pamäti o zosnulom, ktoré sa prejavujú i v pamätiach individuálnych a kolektívnych.
