Understanding of the Nation in Current Slovakia: The Reflection of Radical Nationalism in Slovak-Hungarian Relations

Abstract:

Tématem bakalářské práce je přiblížit vnímání národa a nacionalistické tendence na současném Slovensku a posoudit jejich dopady na vztahy mezi majoritní společností a maďarskou menšinou a také na přeshraniční slovensko-maďarské politické dění. Časově se práce soustředí na období po vyhlášení samostatné Slovenské republiky v roce 1993 se zvláštním zřetelem na éru vlády Roberta Fica (po r. 2006), kdy se slovenský nacionalismus projevuje v zesílené podobě. Autor nejprve zohledňuje argumenty některých výrazných teoretiků nacionalismu, řadících se k tzv. modernistům, především Ernesta Gellnera, Anthony Smithe, Benedicta Andersona a Miroslava Hrocha, a postupně aplikuje jejich závěry. Autor přitom rovněž ukazuje, že slovenský nacionalismus je zakotven už v Ústavě SR z roku 1992 a je tedy do jisté míry státním. Samotná analýza slovenské společnosti je založena na přiblížení tří významných nacionalizačních tendencí, jimiž jsou mytologizace slovenských dějin, postavení národního jazyka a jeho státní ochrana a vliv národní osvětové organizace Matice slovenské. Teorie je také průběžně porovnávána s řadou empirických dat z výzkumů veřejného mínění některých sociologických autorit. Aby bylo možné vůbec pochopit současné složité slovensko-maďarské vztahy, nabízí autor i sondu do jejich historie. Ukazuje se totiž, že moderní slovenský nacionalismus má v mnohém podobu probouzení evropských národů v polovině 19. století. Naopak aktuální dopady zohledňuje zpravodajský sled nejrůznějších kontroverzních událostí a diplomatických přešlapů Ficova kabinetu, vrcholem pak jsou slovenské prezidentské volby na jaře 2009 a také události ze srpna 2009, kdy slovenská vláda zakázala maďarskému prezidentu Lázsló Sólyomovi vstup do země. Z metod autor využívá především sběr dat z primárních pramenů, analýzu a srovnání řečových aktů a prohlášení slovenských politiků, nejrůznějších dokumentů, oficiálních výstupů parlamentních i neparlamentních subjektů apod.

Abstract:

The topic of this BA thesis is to bring closer the perceiving of the nation and the nationalistic tendencies in current Slovakia. The work also considers the tendencies and their impact on the relationships between the majority of society and the Hungarian minority and also the cross-border Slovak-Hungarian political events. Time wise, the work focuses on the period after the declaration of independence of the Slovak Republic back in 1993, concentrating on the era of Robert Fico's government (after 2006), when Slovak nationalism shows itself in a more powerful way. The author of this work at first regards the arguments of some outstanding theoreticians of nationalism, belonging among the so-called modernists, mainly those of Ernest Gellner, Anthony Smith, Benedict Anderson and Miroslav Hroch, and later applies their conclusions. The author also shows that Slovak nationalism is anchored in the Slovak Constitution dating from 1992 and is therefore to some extent national. The analysis itself of Slovak society is based on presenting the three outstanding nationalizing tendencies: The mythologization of Slovak history, the position of the national language along with its state protection and the influence of the national enlightening organization, the so-called Matica slovenska (The Slovak Foundation). Throughout the work, the theory is also compared to a lot of empiric data from public opinion surveys of several sociological authorities. To be actually able to understand the currently difficult Slovak-Hungarian relationships, the author of this work also offers a probe into their history. It is becoming apparent that modern Slovak nationalism has a lot in common with the 'awakening' of European nations in the 19th century. On the other hand, the current impact is drawn from reports in the media of a succession of various controversial events and diplomatic errors of Fico's cabinet, the peak of which are represented in the Slovak presidential election of spring 2009 and also the events from August 2009, when the Slovak government forbade the Hungarian president Lazslo Solyom to enter the country. In the work, the author mainly uses the method of collecting data from primary sources, analysis and comparison of speeches and declarations of Slovak politicians, various documents, official speeches and briefings of both parliamentary and non-parliamentary subjects, etc.
