Molecular causes of schizophrenia: association study

Abstract:

Theoretical preparation of bachelor thesis consists of study of current knowledge in the field of genome-wide association studies and brief analysis of the most significant genetic findings in regards to schizophrenia research. Goals of bachelor thesis include description of the illness with emphasis on symptomatology, basic diagnostic classification and pathogenesis. Main part of bachelor thesis comprises of the chapter related to the association studies, with focus on genome-wide association studies. This chapter involves the description of the historical development in the field, clarifies the basic aspects of the method mentioned and indicates possibilites of its application in the research after the genetic features underlying the pathogenesis of the illness. The final part of the thesis is dealing with the most important candidate genes suspected of participating in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia.

Abstract:

Teoretická príprava k bakalárskej práci zahŕňa štúdium aktuálnych poznatkov v oblasti celogenómových asociačných štúdií a stručný rozbor najvýznamnejších genetických objavov súvisiacich s výskumom schizofrénie. Medzi ciele bakalárskej práce patrí charakterizácia ochorenia z dôrazom na symptomatológiu, základné diagnostické členenie a patogenézu. Hlavnú zložku bakalárskej práce tvorí kapitola venovaná asociačným štúdiám, pričom zvýšená pozornosť je venovaná najmä celogenómovym asociačným štúdiám. Spomínaná kapitola zahŕňa popis historického vývoja v danej oblasti, objasňuje základne aspekty uvedenej metódy a uvádza možnosti jej aplikácie vo výskume genetickej podstaty patogenézy ochorenia. Záverečná časť práce pojednáva o najdôležitejších kandidátnych génov podozrivých z účasti na patogenéze schizofrénie.
