Applying Complexity Theory to Life Writing Genres: The Case of Margaret Mead's Autobiography

Abstract:

Poslední velký posun od autobiografie k life writing není novinkou a nebude poslední změnou. Žánry se objevují, rozvíjejí, rozšiřují, spojují a rozmazávají. Otázkou komplexnosti a dynamiky vývoje žánrů se v poslední době zabývá jen málo publikovaných prací, včetně toho nedávného, který se zaměřuje na moderní trendy v life writing. Podle některých webových stránek by se autobiografický popis považoval za součást jednoho nebo více žánrů. Někteří kritici zvažují složitost, když klasifikují literární dílo jako umění nebo vědu nebo v kánonu nebo mimo něj. Ačkoli je obtížným úkolem klasifikovat mnoho autobiografických děl, ať už starých nebo nových, některé prvky, jako je brikoláž, tlustý popis, hybridita, intertextualita, mode a sub žánry, by mohly vysvětlit některé aspekty této složitosti. Ale koncepty teorie složitosti, jako je vznik, atraktory, interakce atd., mohou vrhnout nové světlo na vztahy a propojenost faktorů souvisejících s vývojem a chováním žánrů, což přispívá k univerzálnějšímu modelu life writing. Obecně panuje shoda, že hranice žánrů nejsou jasné. V Meadově autobiografii Blackberry Winter: My Earlier Years sehrála roli složitost při rekonstrukci jejího životního příběhu, takže bylo obtížné rozpoznat její dílo jako umění nebo vědu. Dynamika mezi uměním a vědou je velmi složitá a k zachycení těchto interakcí je zapotřebí rozšířený model, který kombinuje koncepty uměleckého a vědeckého charakteru. Mnoho vědeckého obsahu by v literatuře mohlo chybět nebo by se literatura mohla z vědy vymizet, pokud bychom kategorizovali text, aniž bychom vzali v úvahu komplexní charakter jakéhokoli uměleckého díla. Toto studium přispěje k vyhledávání literárních a vědeckých textů. V tomto případě by koncepty teorie složitosti aplikované na koncepty life writing mohly hrát roli, protože jsou brány v úvahu potřeby a očekávání zúčastněných stran.

Abstract:

The latest major shift from autobiography to life writing is not new and will not be the last change. Genres appear, develop, expand, merge, and blur. The issue of complexity and dynamics of genres development has been discussed recently by few published papers, including the recent one focusing on modern trends in life writing. According to some websites, an autobiographical account would be considered to belong to one genre or more. Some critics consider complexity when classifying literary work as art or science or in or out of a canon. Though it is a difficult task to classify many autobiographical works, whether old or new, some elements such as bricolage, thick description, hybridity, intertextuality, mode, and subgenres, could explain some facets of this complexity. But concepts of complexity theory, such as emergence, attractors, interactions, etc., can shed new light on the relationships and interconnectedness of factors related to genres development and behavior, contributing to a more universal model of life writing. Generally, there is a consensus that boundaries of genres are not clear cut. In Mead’s autobiography Blackberry Winter: My Earlier Years, complexity played a role in reconstructing her life story, making it difficult to recognize her work as art or science. The dynamic between art and science is very complex, and an expanded model that combines concepts of artistic and scientific character is required to capture these interactions. Much scientific content could go missing in the literature, or the literature could disappear from science if we categorize a text without considering the complex character of any artwork. This study will contribute to searching for literary and scientific texts. In this case, concepts of complexity theory applied to concepts of life writing could play a role as the needs and expectations of the stakeholders are taken into account.
