Roman Libraries in Asia Minor: Ephesus and Nysa

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou římských knihoven, zvláště pak jejich historií, architekturou, funkčností a sochařskou výzdobou. Je zaměřena na knihovny ze začátku 2. století n. l. v Malé Asii, na knihovnu v Ephesus a knihovnu v Nyse. Neopomíjí také historii a archeologické výzkumy obou měst. Poté se zaměřuje na architekturu a dekoraci obou knihoven. Hlavně zmiňuje známou fasádu knihovny v Efesu a velice dobře popsaný vnitřní prostor knihovny v Nyse. Zaměřuje se i na nápisy, uvedené na knihovně v Efesu, hodnotí je, a dle nich popisuje i život Tib. Iul. Celsa Polemaeana, díky zde napsanému cursus honorum. Dále popisuje sarkofágy, které byly nalezeny uvnitř knihoven. Uvádí i obecné informace o tomto pohřebním ritu uvnitř knihoven. V dalších částech práce je pak provedeno srovnání obou staveb, srovnání sarkofágů a také rekonstrukcí. Následně jsou zmíněny další knihovny na území římské říše a to Trajánova knihovna v Římě, Hadrianova knihovna v Aténách a Neonova knihovna v Sagalassu. Tyto knihovny jsou pak použity ke srovnání s maloasijskými knihovnami. Práce se tedy snaží o vystihnutí hlavních odlišností architektury knihoven a to jak na uvedených knihovnách v Nyse a Efesu, tak i mezi ostatními knihovnami.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with an issue of Roman libraries, especially their history, architecture and sculptural decoration. The issue is focused on the early 2nd century libraries in Asia Minor, library in Ephesos and a library in Nysa It doesn’t also omit history and archaeological researches both cities. Then I focused on architecture and decoration of these libraries. It mainly mentions well-known facade of Ephesos library and well-described inner space of library in Nysa. It is focused on inscriptions mentioned in Ephesos library, it evaluates it and according to them it describes lives of Tiberius Iulius Celsus Polemaeanus, thanks to written cursus honorum. There is also a description of the sarcophaguses which were found inside the libraries. It also presents general information about this funeral rite. There is also a comparison of both the buildings, sarcophaguses and reconstruction. Subsequently there are mentions of next libraries in the Roman Empire territory and Traian library in Roma, Hadrian library in Athens and Neon library in Sagalassos. These libraries are used for a comparison with Minor Asia libraries. The thesis tries to depict main architectural dissimilarities of libraries in Nysa, Ephesus as well as between the other ones.
