Implementation of Experiential Learning in the Form of Escape Games within English Lessons at Lower-Secondary Schools

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá implementací zážitkového učení ve formě únikových her v hodinách anglického jazyka na druhých stupních základní škol v České republice a zkoumá, jak jsou takové hodiny vnímány z pohledu vyučujících, jako organizátorů takových aktivit, a žáků, kteří se únikových her účastní v rámci výuky výše zmíněného jazyka. Dále se práce zaměřuje na jednotlivé aspekty takové formy výuky a snaží se odhalit, jaký mohou mít únikové hry dopad na výuku v rámci vzdělávacích i výchovných cílů. Pro tento výzkum byl zvolen kvalitativní přístup s cílem zjistit podrobné informace. Toho bylo možno dosáhnout pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů se dvěma vyučujícími, kteří mají s únikovými hrami ve výuce angličtiny zkušenosti, a dále se dvěma výzkumnými skupinami sestávajících z několika žáků, kteří bývají součástí takových hodin. Výzkum přinesl zjištění, že je implementace takové formy výuky zejména pro-spěšná pro třídní kolektiv a dále je velmi dobrým zpestřením a motivační aspektem v rámci učení.

Abstract:

This master’s thesis focuses on implementing experiential learning in the form of es-cape games in English lessons in the context of lower-secondary schools in the Czech Republic and scrutinises teachers’ perception as the organisers of such lessons and what view the learners participating in such lessons hold. Furthermore, the thesis concentrates on the individual aspects of such a form of learning. It wishes to discov-er what impact escape games can have on the educational process in terms of instruc-tional and pedagogical outcomes. This research was executed through the qualitative type of research, which was achieved conducting out semi-structure interviews with two teachers who have ex-perience preparing escape games in their English lessons, and also with the focus groups consisting of a few pupils who participate in the said games. Eventually, the research found that implementing such a form of learning is especially beneficial for the class collectives and the relationships within them. Also, it has shown that escape games are seen as a great enlivening of the traditional lessons and a great motivation factor.
