Women and politics: transformation of opinions on political representation of women in Czech political thinking from the perspective of representation theory

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá otázkou vývoje názorů na tématiku politické reprezentace žen v politice z pohledu politické teorie a její reflexe v rámci české (československé) politické filozofie. Cílem práce je popsat základní teorie politické reprezentace či otázku vztahu mezi reprezentantem a reprezentovanými, ale současně i odlišnosti mezi deskriptivní, substantivní či symbolickou koncepcí reprezentace. Stěžejním cílem této práce je seznámení se s dvojím pojetím přístupu k teorii reprezentace, které hodnotí účast žen v politice. Jedná se o přístupy liberální a konzervativní. Ty jsou následně zkoumány z pohledu, jakým způsobem se odráží v přístupu k reprezentaci a případně proměňují v české diskuzi o reprezentaci žen v období od konce 19. století do současnosti.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the evolution of opinions on the topic of the representation of women in politics from the point of view of political theory; and the reflection of these opinions in the Czech (Czechoslovakian) political philosophy. The aim of this dissertation is to describe the fundamental theories of political representation and the question of the relationship between the representative and the represented; together with differences between the descriptive, substantive and symbolical conception of representation. The key objective of this thesis is the familiarization with two different approaches towards the theory of representation that evaluate women's participation in politics. The liberal approach and the conservative approach are examined to determine in which way they are reflected in the access to representation and possibly altered in the Czech discussion about the representation of women from the end of the 19th century until today.
