Anotácia:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá knihou Johna Foxe The Book of Martyrs, především části knihy, která pojednává o Janu Husovi. První část práce se týká historického pozadí dané doby, tedy období reformace, a to jak v Evropě tak v Anglii. Je zde též krátké pojednání o předchůdcích reformace, Janu Wycliffovi a Janu Husovi i postavení Jana Husa v dnešní době. Druhá část práce je zaměřena na život autora The Book of Martyrs Johna Foxe. Po ní následuje část zabývající se zdroji použitými pro jeho dílo a také způsobem, jakým s nimi pracoval, a zda-li byl nezaujatým autorem. Na konci této kapitoly je vysvětleno Foxovo chápání “univerzální církve”, které se zaměřuje na důvody, kvůli kterým byl Hus zařazen do The Book of Martyrs. Třetí část se zabývá zdrojovým textem, který John Foxe použil pro The Book of Martyrs. Nejdříve je představen autor tohoto zdrojového textu Petr z Mladoňovic a dále následuje charakteristika tohoto díla Relatio de M. Joannis Hus causa in concilio Constanciensi acta. Poslední část nabízí výsledky srovnání těchto dvou textů a pokouší se podat vysvětlení různých odchylek, a ty pak zobecnit.

Abstract:

This Master thesis deals with John Foxe’s Book of Martyrs and especially with the section of the book detailing the story of Jan Hus. The first chapter of the thesis gives the reader the historical background of the time, i.e. the era of the Reformation, in Europe as well as England. There is also a brief section devoted to the two precursors of the Reformation: John Wycliffe and John Hus. The present-day understanding of Hus is explained. The second chapter focuses on the author of The Book of Martyrs, John Foxe. This includes a section dealing with today’s understanding of John Foxe’s credibility as an historian, particularly the way he handled source materials and a look at whether he appears to have been an unbiased author or not. The end of the second chapter examines how Foxe understood the term “Universal Church”, and possible reasons for incorporating Hus into The Book of Martyrs. The third chapter examines the source text of The Book of Martyrs. After Peter Mladonovic, its author, is introduced, we examine his main work Relatio de M. Joannis Hus causa in concilio Constanciensi acta. The final chapter of this thesis is devoted to a side-by-side comparison of the two texts by Foxe and Mladonovic. The comparison and subsequent analysis shows how these two texts differ and whether the deviations can be explained.
