"They brought the Bible with them...": Collective memory of Czech Evangelicals abroad

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá českými evangelickými sbory ve východní a jihovýchodní Evropě, které vznikly po vystěhování českého obyvatelstva do okrajových částí habsburské monarchie. Důvody k vystěhování byly ekonomického rázu. Tyto sbory vznikly v 19. a na počátku 20. století. Potomci Čechů v rámci orální historie vyprávějí své vzpomínky na minulost sboru a komunity. Práce zaznamenává, jak poslední čeští evangelíci vzpomínají na své dějiny. Dále hledá společné rysy kolektivní paměti napříč všemi komunitami a identifikuje faktory, které pomáhají k jejímu zachování.

Abstract:

The present thesis entertains the Czech evangelical churches in Eastern and Southeast Europe, as some Czech populations moved into the border parts of the Habsburg Monarchy. The reasons for moving out were of economic nature. Those churches formed in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century. As part of oral history, the descendants of Czechs tell their memories of the past of their church and community. The thesis captures how the last Czech Evangelicals remember their history. In addition, it seeks to identify common traits of collective memory across all communities and identifies the factors fostering its preservation.
