Differences across cultures viewed from the perspective of foreigners living in the Czech Republic

Anotace:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá vlivem kultury na její příslušníky a jejich reakce na jiné kultury. Práce zkoumá kulturní prostředí a rozdílnosti mezi příslušníky odlišných kultur a poukazuje na rozličnost vnímání cizích kultur. Teoretická část práce představuje definice kultury, popisuje kulturní odlišnosti a chápání jiných kultur a poukazuje na stereotypy. Dále se zaměřuje na kulturní šok, jenž se běžně vyskytuje na počátku kulturního přizpůsobení. Teoretická část také poskytuje specifické informace o imigrační situaci a cizincích žijících v České republice. Praktická část práce zahrnuje výzkum provedený mezi imigranty v České republice a přináší přehled kulturních rozdílů a jejich vnímání jednotlivými cizinci. Anonymní odpovědi z průzkumu byly shromážděny od cizinců žijících v České republice a zobrazují jejich zájmy a názory ve spojitosti s touto zemí. Analyzované výsledky ukázaly několik propojení s teorií, jako například symptomy naznačující kulturní šok. Poslední část práce obsahuje souhrn výsledků a stručné doporučení řešení problematických oblastí.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the influence of culture upon its members and their reactions to other cultures. It explores the cultural background and dissimilarities of members of different cultures and it points out diverse perceptions of foreign cultures. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces several definitions of the term culture, describes cultural differences and individuals’ awareness of other cultures, and points out stereotypes. Moreover, it focuses on culture shock, which commonly occurs in the beginning of cultural accommodation. The theoretical part also provides specific information about the immigration situation and the foreigners living in the Czech Republic. The practical part of the thesis includes a research conducted among the immigrants in the Czech Republic and brings in an overview of the cultural differences and perceptions of individual foreigners. The anonymous answers of the survey were gathered from foreigners living in the Czech Republic and illustrate their interests and views connected to this country. The analysed results show several connections with the theory, such as symptoms indicating culture shock. The last part of the thesis consists of the summary of the results and brief recommendations for improvements of the problematic areas.
