Vegetation succession on disused railways: effects of time, habitat and landscape context

Abstract:

Při vývoji železniční sítě dochází k rušení některých tratí. Na nich často bývá ponecháno těleso trati bez dalších zásahů a dochází zde k sukcesi vegetace. Práce porovnává rostlinná společenstva 25 zrušených tratí na území Česka a v příhraničních oblastech Německa a Rakouska z pohledu vývoje vegetace, počtu druhů cévnatých rostlin, druhového složení a výskytu ohrožených dru-hů. Byla využita metoda chronosekvence, tedy srovnávání tratí zrušených před různě dlouhou dobou. Jako vysvětlující proměnné byly použity klimatické podmínky, nadmořská výška, doba od zrušení trati, okolní prostředí a mikroreliéf terénu. Pro modelování druhového složení byla použita kanonická korespondenční analýza (CCA) a detrendovaná korespondenční analýza (DCA). Počty druhů a vztahy druhů k proměnným byly modelovány pomocí zobecněných lineárních modelů. Klasifikace vegetace byla provedena metodou Twinspan a klasifikačním expertním systémem CzechVeg-ESy. V prvních letech od zrušení tratí převažuje malé množství druhů s širokou ekologickou amplitudou. Postupně dochází k nárůstu počtu nelesních druhů, jejichž počet vrcholí 20 let od zrušení trati. Poté s rostoucím zastíněním dřevinami množství nelesních druhů začíná ubývat a nahrazují je druhy vázané na lesní prostředí. Sukcese probíhá rozdílně v různých nadmořských výškách. Mnoho druhů je vázaných na nízké (Rosa canina, Arrhenatherum elatius) nebo vysoké polohy (Agrostis capillaris, Sorbus aucuparia). Sukcesi ovlivňuje také okolní krajina, především vzdálenost od lesa, na níž závisí počet lesních a nelesních druhů. Nebyl zjištěn vliv mikroreliéfu terénu na průběh sukcese. Ohrožených rostlin je na zrušených tratích méně než na tratích v provozu, ovšem vyskytnout se mohou. Sukcese probíhá pomalu, vegetace ani po více než sto letech vývoje není vyvinutá do stadia klimaxu. Proto může být vhodné v přírodně cenných biotopech pozůstatky trati odstranit. V člověkem pozměněné krajině naopak zrušené trati zvyšují diverzitu a pestrost krajiny.

Abstract:

During the development of the railway network, some railways are being closed. Closed tracks are usually left without any intervention, and vegetation develops through spontaneous succession. This thesis deals with vegetation succession on 25 closed railway tracks in Czechia and its borderland in Austria and Germany. Vegetation has been compared from the perspective of succession, number of vascular plants species, species composition and threatened species. The study is based on the space-for-time substitution method, which means comparing disused tracks at different times from closing. Climatic data, altitude, time from closing, terrain microrelief and landuse in railway surroundings were used as explanatory variables. Species composition was modelled using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). The number of species and species relations to the explanatory variables were modelled using generalized linear models. Vegetation classification was performed using Twinspan and the classification expert system CzechVeg-ESy. In the early years after railway closing, a small number of generalists are present. The number of non-forest species is growing with a culmination in 20 years from closing. Afterwards, due to shading, the number of non-forest species drops while forest species are replacing them. Vegetation succession differs depending on the altitude. Many species are confined to either the lowlands (Rosa canina, Arrhenatherum elatius) or the highlands (Agrostis capillaris, Sorbus aucuparia). Succession is also affected by the surrounding landscape. The number of forest and non-forest species depends on the site distance to the nearest forest. No effect of terrain microrelief on vegetation succession was detected. Closed railways support fewer threatened plant species than the operated ones, but some threatened species do occur there. Succession proceeds slowly, and even after more than a hundred years, the vegetation is not fully developed into the climax. Therefore, it can be meaningful to remove the track line entirely in the areas with valuable natural habitats, while in the agri-cultural or urban landscape, closed railways can be left untouched as they in-crease the landscape diversity.
