Clash of the Máj Generation: Works by Vítězslav Hálek and Jan Neruda through the Prism of Quantitative Linguistic Analyses

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na analýzu básnických děl Vítězslava Hálka a Jana Nerudy pomocí stylometrických indexů. Cílem práce je zjistit, čím se od sebe autoři liší, a v čem jsou si naopak podobní. Básnické sbírky podrobíme analýze pomocí stylometrických metodik nezávislých na délce textu ? aktivity (Q), indexu slovního bohatství (MATTR), průměrné délky slova (ATL), vzdálenosti sloves (VD), nominality (n), klíčových slov (keywords) a eufonie (E). V práci nejdříve představíme autory a charakterizujeme jejich básnické sbírky z hlediska literárního. Dále představíme zkoumaný korpus a metodologii. Hlavní část práce je vyhrazena analýze a prezentaci výsledků. Závěrečná kapitola je věnována didaktickému potenciálu díla Vítězslava Hálka a Jana Nerudy.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on the analysis of poetic works by Vítězslav Hálek and Jan Neruda via stylometric indices. The aim of the thesis is to find out what makes the authors different from each other and what makes them similar. Poetry collections will be analysed using stylometric methods independent of the length of the text ? activity (Q), vocabulary richness (MATTR), average word/token length (ATL), verb distance (VD), nominality (n), keywords, and euphony (E). In the thesis, we first introduce the authors and characterize their poetry collections from the literary point of view. Next, we will introduce the examined corpus and methodology. The main part of the work is dedicated to the analysis and presentation of results. The final chapter is devoted to the didactic potential of the works of Vítězslav Hálek and Jan Neruda.
