India's nuclear program: The original motives and their evolution over time

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je zkoumat různorodé motivace, jež v průběhu historie určovaly vývoj indického nukleárního programu od jeho zahájení, přes rozhodnutí vyvinout jaderné zbraně až po současnost. Práce nejprve zohledňuje přístup neorealismu, když se věnuje vlivu vnějších bezpečnostních hrozeb především ze strany Pákistánu a Číny. Vychází ale také z organizační teorie a kognitivního přístupu zkoumajících roli jednotlivých aktérů na substátní úrovni jako jsou politické strany a vědecké instituce, armáda a veřejné mínění. V poslední části se pak práce zabývá vývojem vazby mezi rozvojem jaderného programu a indickými ambicemi zvýšit svoji prestiž v mezinárodním prostředí. Práce by měla ve výsledku odpovědět na tyto výzkumné otázky: Jaké motivace vedly Indii k zahájení vojenského jaderného programu? Které faktory zapříčinily dlouhé časové intervaly mezi zahájením jaderného výzkumu, prvním testem a výrobou jaderných zbraní? Jaké jsou hlavní motivace vedoucí Indii k dalšímu rozšiřování jaderného arzenálu?

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to examine the diverse motivations, which shaped the Indian nuclear program since its inception, through the decision to develop nuclear weapons until the present time. The thesis first takes into account neorealistic theory when it deals with the influence of external security threats, mainly from Pakistan and China. It focuses then on the arguments of organizational theory and cognitive approach and examines the role of sub-state actors such as political parties and scientific institutions, the military and public opinion. In the last part links between the development of Indian nuclear program and state’s ambitions to increase its prestige in the international environment are examined. The thesis should ultimately answer the following research questions: What incentives have led India to launch a military nuclear program? What factors caused the long time intervals between the start of nuclear research, the first test and manufacture nuclear weapons? What are the main motivations for the further expansion of India's nuclear arsenal?
