The nation as a programme: the reflection of Radl's idea of the nation as a political process

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je představení kritiky kmenového a rasového nacionalismu v díle Emanuela Rádla s ohledem na jeho snahu o konstrukci národa na programovém základě. Autor se rovněž pokouší o zasazení těchto témat do celkového kontextu Rádlovy filosofie i do kontextu dobového, se snahou prokázat ojedinělost Rádlova politicko-filosofického snažení v prostředí první Československé republiky. Součástí práce je vhled do problematiky zrodu českého národa od počátku devatenáctého století, který je spjat s problematikou zrodu české národní identity. Do protikladu je postavena široce přijímaná národní identita, založená kmenově a kulturně (či rasově) proti identitě smluvní, programové, kterou nabízel Emanuel Rádl. V závěru je učiněn drobný pokus o srovnání Rádlových hlavních tezí a argumentů s některými současnými autory, kteří se zabývají problémem budování identity v postnacionálním světě, konkrétně v prostoru vznikající Evropské unie.

Abstract:

The thesis introduces a criticism of the tribal and racial nationalism in the work of Emanuel Radl regarding his effort to build the nation on the programme bases. Author also tries to put the topic into broader context of Radl's philosophy and the time period to proof the uniqueness of Radl's political and philosophical effort in the setting of the first Czechoslovakian republic. A part of this work is an insight to the inception of the Czech nation since the beginning of 19th century, which is connected to the inception of the Czech national identity. As a contrary to the broadly accepted national identity based on tribes and culture (or race) there is the one offered by Emanuel Radl - programme and set up by identity contracts. In the end of this thesis there is a small experiment - comparison of Radl's main principles and arguments with some of the contemporary authors dealing with the problem of building identity in post-national world, concretely in the area of the arising European Union.
