Islamophobia and identity of czech women-convertits to islam: Transformation of cultural self-identification and strategies of (self)presentation to succesful reintegration

Abstract:

Po konverzi k islámu se české ženy mohou dostávat do situací, které mohou představovat neočekávanou výzvu pro jejich novou muslimskou identitu. Důsledkem transformace kulturní sebeidentifikace (přihlášením se k islámu) dochází současně k proměně různých způsobů performance vlastního „Já“ (např. signifikantně zahalováním). Díky tomu se mohou tyto ženy setkávat s nestandardními reakcemi svého nemuslimského okolí. Tyto odezvy na onu neobvyklou sebeprezentaci mohou vyústit v krajním případě v islamofobní útoky nebo narážky. Nestandardní reakce mohou vyvolávat pocit nesounáležitosti se stávající komunitou a v důsledku se tyto ženy mohou dostat do sociálně dezintegrované až marginalizované pozice vůči majoritní společnosti. Odpovědí muslimek na nastalou situaci může být vědomě vyvinuté úsilí o znovu začlenění a tím si mohou vyvinout několik strategií sebeprezentace a řízení dojmů, které jim mohou významně pomoci se do majoritního společenství reintegrovat bez větší ztráty vlastní nové identity. Cílem této případové studie bude snaha objasnit otázku: „Jaké tyto ženy využívají strategie sebeprezentace a řízení dojmů k úspěšné reintegraci do české společnosti?“. Data budou získávána prostřednictvím narativně-biografických rozhovorů. Práce chce tímto přispět k prozkoumání problematiky sociální integrace a popsat faktory, které ji ovlivňují (zejména např. předsudky a stereotypní představy).

Abstract:

After conversion to Islam, Czech women may find themselves in a situation that may cause an unexpected challenge to their new Muslim identity. As a result of the transformation of cultural self-identification (by converting to Islam), their self-presentation may change (typically by covering hair). As a result these women may encounter nonstandard reactions that can ultimately result in Islamophobic attacks or allusion. Nonstandard reactions can evoke a feeling of inacceptance in the local community and thus these women can get into socially deintegrated or even marginalized position within the majority society. A conscious effort for reintegration may be put forth by Muslim women employing several strategies of self-presentation and impression management that might enable reintegration into the majority society without losing their new cultural self-identification. The aim of this case study is to clarify the question: „Which strategies of self-presentation and impression management these women use to successfully reintegrate into Czech society and how those strategies help their reintegration?“. Data will be obtained through a narrative-biographical interviews. The thesis wants to contribute to the study of social integration and to describe the factors that may affect it (especially prejudices and stereotypes).
