The myth of woman - mother in Czech Republic: Its picture, consequences, socialistic and post-socialistic experience

Abstract:

Obraz mateřství v současné české společnosti je přísně normativní a prezentován jako univerzální. Proto jej zkoumám jako mýtus ženy- matky, jehož nejvýznamnějšími aspekty je prezentace mateřství jako přirozené součásti ženské biografie a prezentace matky jako primární a nenahraditelné v péči o dítě. Další součásti tohoto mýtu je konstrukce „přirozených“ ženských vlastností, které jsou definovány na základě vlastností obrazu ideální matky. Obraz mateřství a péče o dítě je tak prezentován jako vycházející z ženské biologie a proto neměnný. Cílem práce je prokázání existence tohoto mýtu v současné české společnosti a zároveň jeho demytologizace a explanace. Výzkum je založen na kvalitativní metodologii a vychází především z feministické perspektivy. V analytické části prezentuji existenci mýtu ženy-matky ve veřejné sféře české společnosti a jeho internalizaci v soukromé biografii matek. Prokazuji striktnost této mytologie, její dopady na českou společnost a analyzuji její vývoj na základě socialistické a postsocialistické mateřské zkušenosti. Tento vývoj, je důkazem sociální povahy mýtu ženy-matky, jež tak prokazatelně nemá základ v ženské biologii a zároveň tento vývoj reflektuje neslučitelnost tohoto obrazu mateřství pro současný transformovaný stav české společnosti. Rozsah práce je 158 839 znaků.

Abstract:

The image of motherhood in contemporary Czech society is strictly normative and presented as universal. Because of this, I explore its as the Myth of Women-Mother, its most important aspects is the presentation of motherhood as a natural part of the women's biographies and the presentation of the mother as the primary and irreplaceable in child care. Other component of this myth is the construction of "natural" female characteristics, which are presented on the basis of the characteristics of the ideal mother image. The image of motherhood and child care is defined as a female based on biology, and therefore unchangeable. This thesis aims to demonstrate the existence of this myth in contemporary Czech society and therewithal demythologizes and explains it. The research is based on qualitative methodology and it is based primarily on a feminist perspective. At the analytical part I present existence of the myth of the Women-Mother in the public sphere of Czech society and its internalization in the private biography of mothers. I show the strictness of this mythology, its impacts on the contemporary Czech society and analyze its development, which based on socialist and post socialist maternal experience. This development is a proof of the social nature of the myth of woman-mother, so clearly which has no basis in female biology, and simultaneously this trend reflects the incompatibility of the current image of motherhood for a transformed state of Czech society. The scope of work is 158 839 characters.
