Determinants of migration between regions in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl nalezení významných faktorů ovlivňujících vnitřní migraci obyvatel napříč kraji České republiky v pozorovaném období v letech 2001-2019. Ke splnění tohoto cíle jsou v práci sestaveny tři modely panelové regresní analýzy, přičemž je každý z modelů modifikovaný pro výzkum migrace celkové populace, migrace mužů a migrace žen. Výsledky panelových regresních modelů predikují vyšší migraci do krajů, které mají vyšší průměrné mzdy, nižší míru nezaměstnanosti, vyšší počet postavených nových bytů a nižší ceny bytů v porovnání s krajem původním. Dále z modelů vyplývá, že migrace předešlého období velmi výrazně ovlivňuje migraci nynější. Se zvyšující se vzdáleností mezi kraji míra vzájemné migrace klesá. Velikost populace v původním i cílovém kraji zvyšuje míru migrace mezi kraji, stejně tak počet sňatků. Vyšší počet absolventů vysokých škol v původním kraji zvyšuje míru emigrace z kraje. Není nalezen vztah mezi průměrným věkem v původním kraji a mírou emigrace z daného kraje. Nicméně je nalezen překvapivý pozitivní vztah mezi průměrným věkem v cílovém kraji a mírou imigrace do kraje. Většina faktorů vysvětlujících migraci mezi kraji v této práci ovlivňuje jak muže, tak i ženy, avšak některé z faktorů statisticky významně působí pouze na jedno z pohlaví.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis aims to find significant factors affecting the internal migration of residents across regions of the Czech Republic in the observed period between 2001-2019. To achieve this goal, three models of panel regression analysis are constructed in the thesis, while each of the models is modified for migration research overall population, male migration and female migration. The results of the panel regression models predict higher migration to regions that have higher average wages, lower unemployment rate, a higher number of new apartments built and lower apartment prices compared to the original region. Furthermore, the models show that the migration of the previous period has very significant effect on the current migration. With the higher distance between regions, the rate of mutual migration decreases. The size of the population in both the origin and destination regions increases the migration rate between regions, as the number of marriages does. A higher number of university graduates in the original region increases the rate of emigration from the region. No relationship is found between the average age in the region of origin and the rate of emigration from that region. However, a surprising positive relationship is found between the average age in the destination region and the rate of immigration to the region. Most of the factors which are explaining migration between regions in this thesis affect men as well as women, but some of the factors have a statistically significant effect only for one of the sexes.
