Symptoms of psychological distress, attachment and attachment hierarchy in prisoners

Abstract:

Cílem tohoto výzkumu bylo zjistit souvislosti dimenzí vazby (attachment), věku a splněného trestu (tj. délky pobytu ve vězení) s úrovní psychických obtíží (resp. mírou vnímaného stresu, depresivní a úzkostnou symptomatologií) u vězeňské populace v České republice a zároveň porovnat tyto proměnné dle typu trestné činnosti. Dalším cílem bylo zmapovat vazbovou hierarchii odsouzených a zjistit, zda se mezi vazbovými osobami vyskytují spoluvězni a zaměstnanci penitenciární péče a zda existují rozdíly v nejčetnějších vazbových osobách z hlediska trestné činnosti. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 155 prvovězněných mužů ve věku 19–79 let, odsouzených do výkonu trestu na základě násilné (n = 84) a nenásilné (n = 71) trestné činnosti. Všichni měli z aktuálního trestu splněno více než šest měsíců. Dimenze citové vazby byly měřeny dotazníkem ECR-RS, míra vnímaného stresu pomocí PSS-10, úzkostná a depresivní symptomatologie metodami GAD 7 a PHQ 9. Vazbová hierarchie byla mapována dotazníkem WHOTO. Výsledky výzkumu ukázaly, že věk a vazbová úzkostnost souvisí se všemi příznaky psychického distresu, zatímco vazbová vyhýbavost souvisí pouze s úzkostnou symptomatologií. S délkou pobytu ve vězení souvisela záporně symptomatologie stresu a úzkosti. Jako signifikantní prediktory psychického distresu se ukázaly věk a vazbová úzkostnost. Mezi pachateli násilné a nenásilné trestné činnosti nebyly nalezeny signifikantní rozdíly ve vazbě ani v úrovni psychického distresu. Dalším zjištěním této práce je, že mezi vazbovými osobami odsouzených za násilnou i nenásilnou trestnou činnost se vyskytují spoluvězni, kteří plní především funkci udržování blízkosti. Zaměstnanci penitenciární péče se objevili ve všech vazbových funkcích nezávisle na typu trestné činnosti. Nejčastěji uváděnou osobou byla u nenásilných vězňů partnerka, zatímco násilní vězni uváděli nejčastěji sami sebe, nebo nikoho. Pachatelé násilné trestné činnosti ve svých hierarchiích umisťovali častěji matky, kamarády, širší příbuzenstvo a sourozence.

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to investigate connection of adult attachment, age and length of imprisonment to psychological distress symptoms (i.e., perceived stress, depression and anxiety symptoms) in Czech prisoners and to compare prisoners by the types of crime which they have committed. Further goal of this study is to explore the offenders‘ attachment hierarchy, to determine their preferences for fellow inmates and penitentiary care employees as attachment figures, and to establish whether there are differences in the most frequent attachment figures in terms of crime. The sample consists of 155 men aged 19–79 years, incarcerated for the first time for violent (n = 84) and non-violent (n = 71) offences. All participants have been imprisoned for no less than six months. Attachment dimensions were determined by ECR-RS questionnaire, perceived stress via PSS-10. Symptoms of anxiety and depression were measured using GAD 7 and PHQ 9. Attachment hierarchy was investigated by method WHOTO. Psychological distress symptoms were associated with age and attachment anxiety, while attachment avoidance was connected only to symptoms of anxiety. Length of imprisonment was associated negatively with stress and anxiety symptoms. Age and attachment anxiety predicted psychological distress. There were no significant differences in attachment or psychological distress between the violent and non-violent offenders. Another finding of this work is that violent and non-violent prisoners placed their fellow inmates in their attachment hierarchy, primarily performing the function of proximity seeking. Penitentiary care employees appeared in all attachment functions, regardless of the type of crime. The most commonly reported person in non-violent prisoners was a partner whereas violent prisoners most often reported themselves or no one. The perpetrators of violent crime were more likely to place mothers, friends, extended family members, and siblings in their hierarchies.
