Changes in value orientation of the dailies MF Dnes and Právo in the context of the silent revolution theory

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá mediální reprezentací materialistických a postmaterialistických hodnot v denících MF Dnes a Právo v letech 1999, 2008, 2017 a 2021. Zvolenou metodou výzkumu je kvantitativní obsahová analýza, skrze kterou jsou identifikovány jednotlivé indikátory hodnot materialismu a postmaterialismu podle teorie tiché revoluce Ronalda Ingleharta. Na vzorku 482 článků je využit komparativní přístup porovnávající články podle jednotlivých let a deníků mezi sebou. Prezentace materialistických a postmaterialistických hodnot v médiích je následně srovnána s výzkumy materialisticko-postmaterialistické orientace společnosti. Výsledky ukazují, že články v obou denících byly převážně materialisticky orientované. Deník MF Dnes artikuloval více postmaterialistických hodnot než Právo. Materialistické hodnoty byly v textech nejvíce přítomny v roce 1999, postmaterialistické pak v roce 2017. Nejčastějším hlavním i vedlejším tématem v převážně materialistických i postmaterialistických článcích bylo téma politické. Postmaterialistické texty dostávaly v denících větší prostor, tedy byly delší než texty materialistické. Srovnání hodnotových změn ve společnosti a v médiích ukazuje, že hodnoty v médiích jsou stabilnější a nemění se tak výrazně jako ty, které zastává společnost.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the media representation of materialist and postmaterialist values in the newspapers MF Dnes and Právo in 1999, 2008, 2017, and 2021. The chosen research method is quantitative content analysis, through which individual indicators of materialist and postmaterialist values are identified according to Ronald Inglehart's theory of the silent revolution. A comparative approach is used on a sample of 482 articles, comparing them between years and among newspapers. The presentation of materialist and postmaterialist values in the media is then compared with research on the materialist-postmaterialist orientation of society. The results show that articles in both newspapers were predominantly materialistically oriented. MF Dnes articulated more postmaterialist values than Právo. Materialist values were most present in the texts from 1999, while postmaterialist values were most present in 2017. The most frequent primary and secondary topic in the predominantly materialist and postmaterialist articles was political. Postmaterialist texts received more space in the newspapers, which means that they were longer than materialist texts. A comparison of value changes in society and the media shows that values in the media are more stable and do not change as significantly as values held by society.
