Sexuality in the Discourse of Sociology, Psychology and Sexology: Medical Discourse on Disorders of Sexual Differentiation from a Gender Perspective

Abstract:

Trinkewitz, Z.: Sexualita v diskurzu sociologie, psychologie a sexuologie: Medicínský diskurz poruch sexuální diferenciace z genderové perspektivy. Bakalářská práce – Masarykova univerzita, Fakulta sociálních studií, Brno 2009. Tato práce se věnuje analýze medicínských diskurzů zabývajích se problematikou poruch sexuální diferenciace. Autor v ní sleduje způsob, jakým je v tomto diskurzu konceptualizováno pohlaví a gender, a zkoumá, jak se reflexe vztahu pohlaví a genderu projevuje v přístupu k pacientům/kám. Práce vychází z poststrukturalistické koncepce diskurzu jako symbolické reprezentace vymezující epistemologické možnosti, v jejichž intencích je strukturován život jednotlivce i společnosti. Na základě této perspektivy lze očekávat, že i přes konstruovanost a arbitrárnost kategorií pohlaví a genderu budou tyto hrát významnou roli jak při reflexi problematiky, tak v přístupu k pacientkám a k pacientům. Pomocí rozboru textů z oblasti endokrinologie vztahujících se k tématu intersexu se práce snaží odhalit, jakým způsobem odborníci a odbornice vnímají a popisují danou problematiku ve vztahu k pohlaví a genderu a jak jej promítají do procesu rozhodování o dalším lékařském postupu. Z analýzy vyplývá, že v lékařské praxi je gender přijímán jako neměnná, rigidní, ontická kategorie, nutná pro fungování jedince ve společnosti. Jeho obsah a závaznost nejsou zpochybňovány a na jeho základě jsou utvářeny osudy lidí: jak pacientů a pacientek či jejich rodin, tak celé společnosti.

Trinkewitz, Z.: Sexuality in the Discourse of Sociology, Psychology and Sexology: Medical Discourse on Disorders of Sexual Differentiation from a Gender Perspective. BA Thesis – Masaryk University, Faculty of Social Studies, Brno 2009. The thesis provides an analysis of medical discourses on issues of disorders of sexual differentiation. The author investigates the way in which sex and gender are conceptualized in this discourse, and he examines how the reflexion of the relation of sex and gender is expressed in the approach to patients. The thesis is based on a post-structuralist concept of discourse as symbolic representation defining epistemological possibilities in whose framework the life of an individual and society is structured. On the basis of this perspective it may be expected that the categories of sex and gender, despite their constructedness and arbitrariness, will play a significant role both in the reflexion of the issues and in the approach to patients. By means of an analysis of papers from the field of endocrinology, the thesis strives to disclose the ways in which experts perceive and describe the given issues in relation to sex and gender, and how they project them into decision-making on further medical planning. It follows from the analysis that gender is accepted as an invariable, rigid, ontic category necessary for an individual’s functioning within society. Its contents and liability remain unquestioned; fates of people are formed on its basis: both of the patients or their families and of the society as a whole.
