Constructivism in Theoretical Computer Science Education

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce byla připravena v rámci doktorského studia na Ostravské univerzitě. Je zaměřena na vzdělávání v oblasti teoretické informatiky. Hlavním cílem výzkumu je prozkoumání aplikačního pojetí výuky na základě již provedených výzkumů. Tento koncept výuky se zaměřuje na vyšší učební cíle jako je porozumění, aplikace, analýza a syntéza. Popsaný experiment byl navržen pro matematickou logiku, ale jeho výsledky mohou být využity i v jiných disciplínách z oblasti teoretické informatiky. Teoretická část práce analyzuje důležité otázky vzdělávání v teoretických disciplínách s ilustrativními příklady. Další část diskutuje současný stav výzkumu v oblasti zájmu. Hlavní výzkumnou metodou je pak experiment, kde je kontrolní skupina studentů vyučována klasickým přístupem a experimentální skupina navrhovaným přístupem s aplikačním pojetím výuky založeném na konstruktivismu. Hypotézy pak jsou ověřovány s pomocí statistické metody analýzy rozptylu. Výsledky zahrnují jednak statisticky významnou účinnost přístupu na vzorku studentů KIP PřF OU, dále také vhodnost pro spíše znevýhodněné studenty s menšími dovednostmi v logice.

Abstract:

This thesis has been prepared in the frame of doctoral studies on University of Ostrava. It is focused on computer science education especially on theoretical computer science education. The main scientific objective is concentrated on research of application concept in education. It could be used in disciplines, which have a strong logical structure and formalization. The concept focuses on higher educational objectives such as understanding, application, analysis and synthesis. The experiment was developed for mathematical logic, but its conclusions could be used also in other branches of theoretical computer science. Theoretical part of the text analyses important issues in education of theoretical disciplines with illustrative examples. Next part discusses the current state of scientific research in education concerning the scope of the thesis. The main research method of the described experiment is a pedagogical experiment. An experimental sample has been taught with an application concept and a check sample has been taught by standard means ("definition-theorem-proof" way without accent on higher educational objectives). The hypotheses of research were specified in detail. The results of these tests have been processed by statistical data analysis methods - mainly analysis of variance. The main results include statistically significant better results with the approach on sample of students (KIP PřF OU). Further we observed the approach to be suitable especially for less educated students in the field.
