Application of the concept of strengths in the work psychology

Abstract:

This diploma thesis examines the relation of the character strengths of personality and life satisfaction. The study is devoted to the particular topics of positive psychology. The first objective of this study was to examine relationship between using of character strengths and life satisfaction in general. The research sample consisted of 240 respondents divided into three groups, 80 people working at forces, 80 from medicine field and 80 from educational field. Also we were comparing two groups in each profession, students and employees. The other aim was to examine differences between character strengths and life satisfaction at three different job professions, analyze the rate of the correlation between character strengths and life satisfaction at professions, whether it is possible to predict life satisfaction by using character strengths to these professions (police and military forces, health care workers and teachers). Personality traits was measured by Signature Strengths Test (Seligman, 2011) and life satisfaction by Satisfaction with life scale (Diener, a kol., 1985). Cronbach´s alfa was calculated to prove reliability of the methods. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analysis. There were found positive significant correlation between using character strengths and life satisfaction. There were found no significant predictors as character strengths by regression analysis. The results of our study about comparing two groups (students and employees), show differences between relationship of character strengths and life satisfaction. Our presumption has not been confirmed about similarity of these groups. Furthemore we examined the relation of spirituality and partnership on satisfaction. Relationship of both on life satisfaction has not been confirmed.

Abstract:

Predložená diplomová práca sa zaoberá vzťahom silných stránok charakteru osobnosti na životnú spokojnosť. Táto štúdia je venovaná vybraným témam pozitívnej psychológie. Prvým cieľom tejto štúdie bolo preskúmať vzťah medzi využívaním silných stránok charakteru a životnou spokojnosťou. Výskumný súbor tvorilo 240 osôb rozdelených do troch skupín, 80 z oblasti ozbrojených zložiek, 80 z lekárskeho povolania a 80 zo vzdelávacej sféry. Ďalším cieľom bolo preskúmať rozdiely medzi týmito stránkami a životnou spokojnosťou u troch rôznych pracovných oblastí, analyzovať vzťahy medzi silnými stránkami a spokojnosťou, takisto či je možná predikcia životnej spokojnosti na základe využívania týchto silných stránok u týchto profesií (ozbrojené zložky, lekári a učitelia). Takisto sme porovnávali dve skupiny v každej profesii, študentov a zamestnancov. Silné stránky boli merané prostredníctvom Signature Strengths Test (Seligman, 2011) a životná spokojnosť prostredníctvom Satisfaction with life scale (Diener, a kol., 1985). Reliabilita metód bola overená prostredníctvom Cronbachovej alfy. Získané dáta boli analyzované a popísané deskriptívnou štatistikou, korelačnou a regresnou analýzou. Pomocou korelačnej analýzy sa potvrdila pozitívna korelácia medzi využívaním silných stránok a životnej spokojnosti. Pomocou regresnej analýzy sme nepotvrdili nami predpokladané silné stránky ako štatisticky významné prediktory životnej spokojnosti u týchto povolaní. Pri porovnávaní silných stránok u jednotlivých povolaní sa objavujú rozdiely v charakterových stránkach a životnej spokojnosti u jednotlivých profesií a u študentov a zamestnancov danej profesie takisto. Náš predpoklad podobných silných stránok u zamestnancov a študentov danej profesie sa nepotvrdil. Ďalej sme zisťovali vzťah spirituality a rodinného stavu na životnú spokojnosť. Pre obe skúmané premenné sa vzťah nepotvrdil.
