Multidisciplinary analysis of Neolithic pottery technology.

Abstract:

Disertace se věnuje problematice aplikace petroarcheologických rozborů keramiky z neolitických lokalit na Moravě, v Čechách a Slovensku. Práce vznikala v souvislosti s řešením výzkumného záměru Ústavu archeologie a muzeologie FF MU (MSM 142100001). Předložená práce výhradně vychází z mikroskopické analýzy keramického střepu. V rámci uvedených souborů keramiky je kombinována s méně často užívanými metodami, jako je počítačová tomografie, izotopové analýzy lidských kostí, paleodermatologická analýza papilárního terénu na keramice a experiment. Uvedené metody byly aplikovány podle potřeby zkoumaných souborů. Z uvedených dílčích výsledků vyplývá, že metoda mikropetrografického rozboru, keramického materiálu může mít zásadní význam pro poznání technologie výroby keramiky. Mikroskopií preparátu jsme téměř ve všech případech schopni určit keramickou surovinu, popsat klasty minerálů a hornin, identifikovat přidávané látky (rostlinná pletiva, písek, grafit, slídu) a určit teploty výpalu na základě teplotních změn minerálů. Rozbory umožňují identifikovat sekundární přepálení střepu, přítomnost složek obsahující tuky a vznik sekundárních minerálů vyvolaný dlouhodobým uložením v zemi. Získané informace nám do jisté míry dávají možnost rekonstruovat výrobní postupy a případně manipulaci s keramickým výrobkem. Předložená práce se snaží také ukázat, že studium keramiky by i nadále mělo být co nejvíce komplexní. Tradiční metody studia keramiky bychom měli ověřovat a doplňovat exaktními metodami a tím zpřesňovat jejich vyhodnocení a interpretaci. Poznávání technologie výroby keramiky by mělo vycházet z podrobného makroskopického popisu, výběru reprezentativního souboru keramiky a následného mikroskopického zhodnocení vzorků. I tyto postupy mají své limity, ale zároveň velký potenciál pro další poznávání výroby keramiky, ekonomicko-sociálních vztahů a kulturních strategií v neolitu.

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis is dealing with the application of the ceramic petrography study from the Neolithic sites in Moravia, Bohemia and Slovakia. This work was done in connection with the research programme number MSM 0021622427 on Department of Archaeology and Museology FF MU. Presented research is based on the microscopic analysis of ceramic potsherd, which is combined with the other analytic technique such as computed tomography, isotopic analysis of human bones, paleodermatology analysis of fingerprints on ceramic material and experiment. Presented methods were used according to the sample’s characteristic. Generally, given results leads to the assumption, that the micropetrography analysis of ceramic material should be very useful for the assessment of the production technology. Microscopic analysis provides us the data about ceramic material composition, describe of minerals and stone clasts, identification of additives (plant fibre, sand, graphite, daze) and to determine the firing temperature by the temperature changes in minerals composition. The analysis allows identifying the secondary burning of the potsherd, the presence of components containing lipids and formation of secondary minerals produced by long-term deposition in the soil. Obtained information provides an opportunity to reconstruct the production processes and manipulation with ceramic product. The present work tries to show that the study of ceramics has to be done comprehensively. Traditional methods for ceramics analyses should be verified by the exact methods to complement and refine the evaluation and interpretation. Getting to know the production technology should be based on detailed macroscopic description, the selection of a representative sample of ceramics and subsequent microscopic evaluation. These methods have their limits, but also great potential for further understanding of pottery production, economic-social relations and cultural strategies in the Neolithic.
