The state of nature: Thomas Hobbes and John Locke

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se budeme zabývat pojetím přirozeného stavu a společenské smlouvy u myslitelů Thomase Hobbese a Johna Locka. Pro vyložení této problematiky je klíčové Hobbesovo dílo Leviathan a Lockovo dílo Dvě pojednání o vládě. Obsah této práce je rozdělen do 4 kapitol, z nichž první je úvod. Druhá kapitola pojednává o Thomasi Hobbesovi, nejprve představuje jeho život a dílo, poté je zevrubně analyzována jeho koncepce přirozeného stavu a společenské smlouvy. Dále je vyložena teorie autorizace moci a také popsána alternativní interpretace těchto myšlenek. Třetí kapitola je věnována Johnu Lockovi. Nejdříve je vyložen jeho život a dílo, následně je studováno i jeho pojetí přirozeného stavu a teorie společenské smlouvy. Nezbytnou součástí výkladu je také jeho teorie vlastnictví. Závěrem je uvedeno několik aspektů, v nichž se tito autoři shodují nebo naopak rozcházejí.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis will deal with conception of the natural state and social contract in works of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. For the interpretation of this conception, works Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes and Two Treatises of Government by John Locke have been selected as crucial. Content of this work is divided into four chapters, of which the first one is introduction. Second chapter refers about Thomas Hobbes, first introducing his life and work, then elaborating more deeply about his conception of the natural state and social contract. Next part will explain theory of authorization of power and introduce alternative interpretation of his thoughts on this topic. Third chapter is dedicated to John Locke. His life and work will be introduced first, followed by study of his conception of the natural state and social contract. Indivisible part of this conception is also his theory of possession. In conclusion several aspects of their theories will be displayed, with emphasis on their similar and different aspects.
