Plato's and Aristotle's conception of the soul and its virtues

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá pojetím duše a ctností u Platóna a Aristotela. Cílem práce je postihnout tato témata v širším kontextu filosofického myšlení obou autorů. Začátek je proto věnován otázce, ze kterých myšlenek oba autoři vycházejí, kterými předchůdci byli ovlivněni a jakou úlohu má duše a mravní jednání v celku jejich filosofického myšlení. Dále se práce zaměřuje na konkrétní nauky o duši. Rozebírá strukturu duše, její vztah k tělu, i jakým způsobem ovlivňuje duše u Platóna a Aristotela lidské jednání. Pátrání po příčině, principu duše a jejímu vztahu k tělu má však u obou filosofů význam především etický a souvisí s mravním jednáním. Proto se práce nevěnuje pouze duši, ale také ctnostem a porovnává přístupy obou filosofů k otázce původu ctností, jejich dělení, či způsobu, jakým lze ctnosti nabýt. V závěru se práce zabývá také tématem péče o duši, které spojuje poznatky o duši a ctnostech do celistvé úvahy, jak vést šťastný a naplněný život.

Abstract:

This thesis describes Plato´s and Aristotele´s concept of the soul and virtues. The aim of this thesis is to express these concepts in the broader context of philosophical thinking of both authors. That is why the beginning of this work is centred on the questions, of which ideas both authors came out, who influenced them and what role the soul and moral behaviour have in their whole philosophical thinking. Furthermore, the thesis focuses on a specific doctrine of the soul. The thesis analyses the structure of the soul, its relationship to the body and how it affects the human behaviour according to Plato and Aristotle. However, the searching for the cause, the principle of the soul and its relationship to the body at both philosophers has especially ethical meaning and is related to moral behaviour. Therefore, the thesis is not only focused on the soul, but also it is focused on virtues and it compares the approaches of both philosophers to the question of the origin of the virtues, their division, or the way how the virtues can be acquired. At the end the thesis also deals with the theme of the care of the soul, which combines the piece of knowledge of the soul and virtues into a coherent consideration of how to lead a happy and fulfilled life.
