Lukáš Jasanský and Martin Polák: The Rebels of Photography

Abstract:

Lukáš Jasanský a Martin Polák jsou fotografové, kteří dnes jako autorská dvojice patří k etablovaným umělcům současné české výtvarné scény, na niž výrazně vstoupili koncem 80.let. Jejich tvorba je však mnohem častěji reflektována - a současně oceňována - z pohledu obecné teorie výtvarného umění, než z pohledu klasické teorie fotografie, a to přesto že oba z prostředí tradiční fotografie vychází. Vedle shrnutí obecné charakteristiky a kontextu tvorby Jasanského a Poláka nás bude zajímat, jakým způsobem je jejich práce přijímána a reflektována, proč docházelo - či stále dochází - k nepochopení ze strany teoretiků a historiků fotografie, z jakého důvodu a jakým způsobem si tito autoři v 90.letech získali uznaní na poli současného výtvarného umění. Vycházet budeme z klasických textů a přehledů fotografie 80. a 90.let z pera Vladimíra Birguse, Miroslava Vojtěchovského, Roberta Silveria a dalších, tedy fotografů a teoretiků fotografie, přičemž je budeme konfrontovat s texty Pavla Vančáta, Karla Císaře či Tomáše Pospiszyla, tedy teoretiků současného výtvarného umění, kteří fotografii v době její nesmírné rozšířenosti považují za přirozenou součást současného umění.

Abstract:

Lukáš Jasanský and Martin Polák are photographers, who, as an artists duo, are established artists of the contemporary czech art scene, which they entered in the end of the 1980s. Their artistic creation is much more often reflected - and appreciated - from the point of view of general art theory, than from the point of view of classical theory of photography, although both artists are based in the environment of traditional photography. Besides the summary of general characteristics and context of the work of Jasanský and Polák, we`re going to be interested in the way the work of these artists is accepted and reflected, why it was - or still is - misunderstood from the side of the theorists and historians of photography and for what reason and how did these authors got acknowledgement in the field of contemporary fine arts. We`re going to work with classical texts about photography from the 1980s and 1990s by Vladimír Birgus, Miroslav Vojtěchovský, Robert Silverio and other photographers and theorists of photography, which we`re going to compare to the texts by Pavel Vančát, Karel Císař or Tomáš - the theorists of contemporary fine arts, who consider photography, in the time of its vast expansion, as a natural part of contemporary art.
