The Turn of the Screw by Henry James: Depiction of the Governess' Dissociative Behaviour Through Gothic and Supernatural Aspects and Psychoanalysis

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis analyses the character of the governess. We focus on the dissociative disorder of the main character in The Turn of the Screw, which is caused by the repression of her desires and from suppressed consciousness. It explores the reasons of the governess' attachment to supernaturalism. The work contains various perspectives of the governess' behaviour and its possible changes which lead to the lack of connection with reality and hallucinations i.e. dissociation. It also explores the way; the governess uses supernatural powers and how she tries to escape reality.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce analyzuje charakter vychovatelky a zaměřujeme se na disociační poruchu osobnosti, která vzniká u hlavní postavy v knize Utažení šroubu. Disociativní porucha vzniká díky potlačení tužeb vychovatelky a také díky potlačenému vědomí. Dále práce zkoumá, proč je vychovatelka tolik přikloněná k nadpřirozenu a také obsahuje různé náhledy na chování vychovatelky a její změny, které vedou k nerozpoznání reality a halucinacím, což jsou příznaky disociace. Také se zkoumá, jak vychovatelka využívá nadpřirozeno ve svůj prospěch a jak se snaží utéct realitě.
