Wag the Dog: The Role of Moral Reasoning in Moral Judgment

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na roli morálního usuzování při tvorbě morálního soudu. Jejím primárním cílem je posoudit, nakolik oprávněná jsou dvě ústřední tvrzení sociálně-intuicionistického modelu (SIM) Jonathana Haidta týkající se právě role morálního usuzování v morálním soudu – jeho kvantitativní („intrapersonální morální usuzování je vzácné“) a kvalitativní teze („existují pouze tři cesty, jimiž může morální usuzování vyvíjet kauzální vliv na morální soud“). Skrze proces tohoto posuzování se práce pokouší dosáhnout i sekundárního cíle, jímž je ambice alespoň částečně zmapovat kritickou pozornost, které se SIM dočkal za více jak deset let své existence ze strany nejrůznějších badatelů vyjadřujících nespokojenost s tím, jakou roli Haidt morálnímu usuzování v morálním hodnocení přisoudil. Tyto základní kritické linie jsou v práci představeny a následně zhodnoceny z hlediska toho, jak velké ohrožení pro SIM představují a zda si s nimi tento model dokáže poradit. Jako jakýsi sparingpartner a záloha pro případ, že by Haidtův model nedokázal vůči předloženým námitkám obstát, v práci figuruje konkurenční model morálního soudu založený na teorii duálního zpracování Joshuy D. Greena.

Abstract:

The focus of this thesis is on the role of moral reasoning in moral judgment. Its primary goal is to assess the extent to which the two central claims of Jonathan Haidt's social intuitionist model (SIM) in relation to the role of moral reasoning in moral judgment are justified – its quantitative (“intrapersonal moral reasoning is rare”) and qualitative claim (“only three ways exist in which moral reasoning can exert a causal influence on moral judgment”). Through this the thesis tries to accomplish also the secondary goal to at least partially document the critical attention that the SIM has received in more than ten years of its existence from the various researchers expressing discontent with the role that Haidt has attributed to moral reasoning in moral judgment. These fundamental lines of criticism are introduced and subsequently evaluated in terms of how great a threat to the SIM they pose and whether it can cope with them. As a sort of sparring partner and a backup in case the SIM would fail there is an alternative model of moral judgment based on Joshua D. Greene's dual-process theory.
