Hope, life satisfaction and meaningfulness of life of the elderly in institutionalized care

Abstract:

Ústředním tématem naší diplomové práce je naděje, spokojenost se životem a životní smysluplnost v souvislostech s faktory predikujícími zdravé stárnutí v populaci seniorů v institucionalizované péči. Teoretická část shrnuje dosavadní poznatky týkající se období stáří a procesu stárnutí, dále představuje koncept zdravého (úspěšného) stárnutí. V teoretické části se také zabýváme některými klíčovými tématy pozitivní psychologie, jako jsou naděje, spokojenost se životem a životní smysluplnost. Hlavním cílem výzkumné části je objasnit vztahy mezi nadějí, spokojeností se životem a životní smysluplností, faktory predikujícími zdravé stárnutí a některými demografickými faktory. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 53 klientů domovů důchodců a domovů pro seniory ve věku od 62 do 99 let. Pro výzkum jsme použili Škálu naděje, Škálu spokojenosti se životem, Škálu životní smysluplnosti a vlastní škály zachycující míru zastoupení faktorů predikujících zdravé stárnutí. Faktory predikující zdravé stárnutí, které se vztahují k minulosti, i ty, které se vztahují k současnosti, statisticky významně pozitivně korelují s mírou naděje, spokojenosti se životem a životní smysluplnosti, na rozdíl od věku, délky pobytu v ústavním zařízení a pohlaví. V míře naděje a životní smysluplnosti dosahují statisticky významně vyšších skórů lidé, kteří žili dříve ve městech, než ti, kteří žili na vesnicích. V kvalitativní části výzkumu jsme získali zajímavé informace o tom, co je pro seniory v institucionalizované péči nejdůležitější, co nejvíce přispívá jejich pohodě a spokojenosti, a zjistili jsme, co by vzkázali dnešním mladým lidem. Výsledky naší práce jsou zajímavým poznatkem v oblasti pozitivní psychologie v problematice stáří.

Abstract:

The central theme of our thesis is hope, life satisfaction and meaningfulness of life with respect to factors predicting healthy aging in the population of seniors in institutionalized care. The theoretical part summarizes the current knowledge concerning the old age period and the aging process, also representing the concept of healthy (successful) aging. In the theoretical part, we also deal with some of the key themes of positive psychology, such as hope, life satisfaction and meaningfulness of life. The main objective of the research is to clarify the relationships between hope, life satisfaction and meaningfulness of life, factors predicting healthy aging and certain demographic factors. The research sample consisted of 53 clients of homes for the elderly aged 62 to 99 years. For research we used an Adult Hope Trait Scale, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Meaningfulness of Life Scale (Škála životnej zmysluplnosti) and its own range of capturing the level of representation of factors predicting healthy aging. Predictors of healthy aging, which relate to the past, and those that relate to the present day, statistically significantly and positively correlate with the degree of hope, life satisfaction and meaningfulness of life, as opposed to age, length of stay in the institution and gender. As far as hope and meaningfulness of life achieve statistically significantly higher scores, people who have previously lived in cities than those who lived in villages. In the qualitative part of the research we have gained interesting information about what is best for the elderly in the institutionalized care, most importantly, what contributes most to their well-being and satisfaction, and we found what they would like to tell today's young people. The results of our study is an interesting finding in the field of positive psychology in the issue of old age.
