The Philosophy of Thomas Jefferson and the American Enlightenment

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je nastínit politické myšlení Thomase Jeffersona. Ve spojení s ním se práce také zabývá politickou filosofií Johna Locka a Davida Huma z toho důvodu, že těmito autory byl Thomas Jefferson inspirován. Jakožto metodu práce volí analýzu dokumentů těchto tří myslitelů. Práce hledá principy, na kterých každý z nich buduje svou filosofii a její konkrétní aspekty. Díky této analýze se poté práce snaží vytvořit komparaci mezi mysliteli. Práce dává odpověď na otázku, zda u Thomase Jeffersona lze najít originální politické myšlení, jež je do velké míry originální a vhodné k dalšímu zkoumání.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to outline the political thought of Thomas Jefferson. The thesis is also concerned with the political thought of John Locke and David Hume with the reason being that Thomas Jefferson was inspired by these authors. The thesis chooses the analysis of documents, whom the three thinkers are authors of as it's method. The thesis is searching for principles on which each individual thinker builds his philosophy upon and the philosophy's specific aspects. The thesis then tries to create a comparison between the thinkers thanks to the analysis. The thesis also answers the question of whether original political thought can be found in Thomas Jefferson and considers it original and suitable for further investigation in a great measure.
