Mexican and North American Culture in the post-68 Prose of Carlos Fuentes and José Agustín

Abstract:

The cultures of Mexico and the USA have been closely interconnected over the last two centuries. The vicinity caused various difficult situations (e. g. Mexican-American War between 1846-1848). The first important intellectual clash between Latin-American and North-American culture emerged in Latin-America during the modernist period at the very end of the 19th century. In the works of José Martí (1853-1895) or Rubén Darío (1867-1916) we can observe inclination towards oppositeness (Latin-American vs. North-American) which graduates with the essay “Ariel” (1900) by José Enrique Rodó (1871-1917). Similar tendencies persist in different forms till today. This thesis is focused on the representation of the Mexican and North-American culture in the post-68 prose of Carlos Fuentes (1928-2012) and José Agustín (1944), two Mexican contemporary authors. After the so-called “Cultural revolution” of 1968 had changed the style of our authors; in the globalized world broke out new cultural topics which are condensed in the following triad: Identity – the “Other” – Religion. This is also the structure of my work. The main goal of the thesis is to compare the two different views of Mexican authors of the friction of Mexican and North-American culture. While José Agustín explores mainly the collision between these two cultures from the point of the view of the Contra-culture, Carlos Fuentes’ view remains within the limits of the official culture. One of the aims of this thesis is also the verification of the supposed substitution of the cultural axe West-East by the axe North-South in the work of our authors.

Mexická a severoamerická kultura se dostaly během posledních dvou století do blízkého kontaktu. Toto sousedství vyvolalo i nejednu komplikovanou situaci (např. Mexicko-americká válka mezi lety 1846-1848). První významnou intelektuální debatu o směřování latinskoamerické a severoamerické kultury otevřeli modernisté na sklonku 19. století. V dílech José Martího (1853-1895) nebo Rubéna Daría (1867-1916) pozorujeme protikladné vnímání obou kultur, které vrcholí v eseji “Ariel” (1900) od José Enrique Rodóa (1871-1917). S podobným vnímáním se v různých formách setkáváme dodnes. Tato disertační práce se zaměřuje na zobrazení mexické a severoamerické kultury v próze Carlose Fuentese (1928-2012) a Josého Agustína (1944) publikované po roce 1968. Po tzv. kulturní revoluci roku 1968 se změnil styl obou autorů, v globalizovaném světě vyvstala nová kulturní témata, která se dají shrnout do následující triády: identita – problém druhého – náboženství. Takto je strukturována i disertační práce. Jejím hlavním cílem bylo porovnat dva odlišné pohledy zmíněných mexických spisovatelů na střet mexické a severoamerické kultury. Zatímco José Agustín zkoumá obě kultury z pozice neoficiální kontrakultury, pohled Carlose Fuentese vychází z kultury oficiální. Práce zkoumá i proměnu kulturní osy Západ-Východ v osu Sever-Jih zobrazenou v díle obou autorů.
