This work analyses the main protagonists of two coming-of-age novels, The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath and The Catcher in the Rye by Jerome David Salinger, as young people growing up in the early postwar America. The analysis deals with the connection between the restricting social atmosphere of the era and the young people’s unsuccessful initiation that eventually results in mental illness.
