Microbial etiology of surgical site infection, comparison of swab and indirect imprint sampling technique in surgical practice

Abstract:

Cílem naší retrospektivní studie bylo srovnání dvou neinvazivních technik odběru materiálu na mikrobiologické vyšetření z chirurgických ran. Srovnávali jsme vykultivované bakterie ze vzorků získaných techniku stěrového tamponu, definovanou v naší studii jako „zlatý standard“ s technikou nepřímého otisku. Dále jsme si položili otázku, zdali je možno tuto techniku použít v běžné chirurgické praxi a ověřit její výsledky získané na našem pracovišti během normálního pracovního dne. Po statistickém zpracování získaných výsledků byla zamítnuta hypotéza stěru jako citlivější odběrové techniky (zlatého standardu) oproti otiskové technice. Nepřímá otisková technika za použití filtračního papíru jako přenosového media je statisticky vysoce citlivější technikou odběru nežli výtěr. I přes určitá úskalí odběru vzorku materiálu z chirurgické rány pomocí otiskové techniky, doporučujeme její užití v rutinní chirurgické praxi.

Abstract:

The aim of the our retrospective study was to compare two noninvasive sampling techniques used in diagnostics to identify the microbes of surgical wounds. We compared bacteria cultured from samples obtained with the use of the swab technique, defined in our study as the “golden standard”, with the indirect imprint technique. The question was whether it would be appropriate to begin this technique and routinely perform it in surgical practice, and also verifying its results in our surgery department during normal operation day. After statistical calculations of all results our study, the hypotheses, that swabs provide us more accurate result (golden standard method) than imprint was not confirmed. Indirect imprint technique using filter paper as transmission medium is accurate sampling method than swab. Despite all complication associated with imprint technique, we recommend it to use in surgical practice.
