The effect of the number of variables in estimating a DSGE model

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je zkoumat vliv počtu proměnných na přesnost odhadů DSGE modelu. V první řadě je představen vybraný model a metody, které budou použity k odhadu a analýze. V praktické části je prezentováno pět specifikací modelu, na kterých je demonstrován efekt změn počtu proměnných. Pro každou specifikaci jsou využity metody jako srovnání momentů, Bayesův faktor, variační dekompozice a funkce impulzní odezvy, které jsou aplikovány na simulovaná i reálná data. V závěru práce je posouzena schopnost těchto metod správně identifikovat data generující model a diskutován jejich praktický dopad na interpretaci ekonomických modelů.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the effect of the number of variables on the accuracy of the DSGE model estimates. Firstly, the selected model and the methods that will be used for estimation and analysis are presented. In the practical part, five model specifications are presented to demonstrate the effect of changes in the number of variables. For each specification, methods such as comparison of moments, Bayes factor, variational decomposition and impulse response function are applied to both simulated and real data. The paper concludes by assessing the ability of these methods to correctly identify the data generating the model and discussing their practical implications for the interpretation of economic models.
