Depression in elite athletes

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na získání systematického přehledu o širších souvislostech deprese u vrcholových sportovců, přičemž si klade za cíl zmapovat potenciální rizi-kové faktory, které mohou souviset se vznikem depresivních symptomů u elitních atletů. Rovněž se v rámci realizovatelného přehledu relevantní odborné literatury prezentuje prevalenci deprese z hlediska genderu, individuálních a kolektivních spor-tů. První část práce je zaměřena na teoretická východiska sportu a deprese. Druhá část pak provází procesem získávání empirických studií do přehledové studie. Celko-vě bylo na základě stanovených kritérií do analýzy zahrnuto 23 empirických studií a identifikováno 56 rizikových faktorů ovlivňujících vznik deprese u vrcholových atletů rozdělených do osmnácti tématických kategorií. Nejvíce rizikových faktorů bylo ob-saženo v tématu Zranění / Bolest (10) a Sportovní stresory (9). Podle dat získaných prostřednictvím analýzy studií byla zjištěna obecná prevalence deprese v rámci vzorku od 10 do 48 %. Také bylo zjištěno, že ženy skórují na škále depresivních symptomů více než muži a individuální sportovci skórují ve zmíněné škále více než týmoví sportovci.

Abstract:

This paper focuses on obtaining a systematic overview of the broader context of de-pression in elite athletes with the aim of mapping the potential risk factors that may be related to the development of depressive symptoms in elite athletes. Furthermore, shows the prevalence of depression in terms of gender, individual and team sports presented in overview of relevant literature. The first part of the work is focused on the theoretical basis of sports and depression. The second part then accompanies the process of obtaining empirical studies into a systematic review study. A total sum of 23 empirical studies were included in the analysis based on the established criteria. There were identified 56 risk factors influencing the development of depression in elite athletes divided into eighteen thematic categories. The most risk factors were included in the topic Injuries / Pain (10) and Sports Stressors (9). According to the da-ta obtained from the analysis of presented studies, a general prevalence of depression within the sample from 10 to 48% was found. It has also been found that women score higher in the scale of depressive symptoms than men and individual athletes score higher in the scale of depressive symptoms than team athletes.
