Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na využívání legendy o králi Artušovi umělci za doby Tudorovců a jejím základem je drama The Misfortunes of Arthur, které bylo napsáno roku 1587. Její první část představuje historické pozadí událostí, na které autoři dramatu odkazují, a dále pak renesanční literaturu a to převážně díla napsaná o královně Alžbětě I. Následující část popisuje životy Alžběty I. a Marie Stuartovny, a poukazuje na souvislosti mezi nimi, protože hlavní záležitostí onoho dramatu je poprava Marie Stuartovny. Třetí část obsahuje vlastní analýzu dramatu, přičemž jejím cílem je ukázat, že cílem autorů bylo komentovat současnou politickou situaci a poskytnout královně rady. Zkoumány jsou modifikace, které autoři na legendě učinili, tudíž král Artuš zastupuje Alžbětu I. a Mordred ztělesňuje Marii Stuartovnu. Dále jsou pak popsána varování proti blížícímu se nebezpečí a občanské válce, která jsou v dramatu obsažena.

Abstract:

This thesis concentrates on appropriating the Arthurian legend by artists of the Tudor era and its core is the drama The Misfortunes of Arthur written in 1587 by the gentlemen of Gray’s Inn. The first part of the thesis introduces the historical background of the era followed by an insight into Renaissance literature concerning mainly the works which were written about Queen Elizabeth I. The subsequent part describes the lives of Elizabeth I and Mary Stuart, and points out important connections between them, since the main issue of the play was the execution of Mary Stuart. The third part contains the actual analysis of the drama whiles its aim is to show that the authors intended to comment on the current political situation and give advice to the Queen. The modifications which the authors made on the Arthurian legend are examined, since King Arthur represents Elizabeth I and Mordred stands for Mary Stuart. Further on the warnings against the Spanish Armada and civil war, which are included in the drama, are discussed.
