From austerity to affluence. Development of British society in the 1950s

Abstract:

Práce pojednává o vývoji britské společnosti v padesátých letech. Cílem práce je zjistit, zda dané období bylo skutečně obdobím blahobytu nebo pouze poválečnou iluzí. První kapitola se zabývá třídím dělením ve společnosti, přičemž největší důraz je kladen na dělnickou třídu. Dělnická třída kvůli plné zaměstnanosti a díky přesčasům i vyšším platům využívala stejné vymoženosti doby jako střední třída. Druhá kapitola popisuje oblast bydlení a stravování, která zaznamenala velké změny. Kvůli poválečné situaci v oblasti bydlení se stavěla nová města a panelové domy a oblast stravování se měnila díky konci přídělového systému. Třetí kapitola popisuje, jak lidé v padesátých letech trávili svůj volný čas. Oblasti bydlení, stravování i volného času jsou zároveň popsány pomocí vzpomínek obyvatel na danou dobu. Období padesátých let lze charakterizovat rostoucí poválečnou prosperitou a novými trendy v technologiích.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to find out whether the period of the 1950s was really a period of prosperity, or whether it was but a postwar illusion. This thesis consists of five parts the introduction, three chapters and the conclusion. The introduction briefly sums up the major affairs of the 1950s. The first chapter deals with the class division of the society, whereas the main emphasis is put on the working class. The working class best reflects the changes taking place in the 1950s. The second chapter describes housing and food. This part looks into new ways of living, for example in prefabricated houses, and innovations in the sphere of alimentation caused by the end of the rationing system. The changes in the society are demonstrated on the memories of the people who lived in the 1950s. The third chapter investigates how people spent their free time. It describes how people went to the cinema, how children and teenagers played and how television culture began. The 1950s are characterized by growing postwar prosperity, full employment, and new trends in technologies.
