Translating wordplay: T. Pratchett's Discworld

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis analyses the tools and methods used by Jan Kantůrek, one of the Czech Republic's most renown translators, in translating jokes and wordplay in Sir Terry Pratchett's first Discworld novel, The Colour of Magic. The main goal of the thesis is to examine Kantůrek's translation and study the similarities and differences between it and the original text. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces both Jan Kantůrek and Terry Pratchett to the reader, while also providing insight into the world of Discworld. Furthermore, it describes the lexical and cultural meaning and function of jokes, in accordance with the works of D. Delabastita, M. Baker and D. Chiaro. The analytical part of the thesis then provides examples of jokes and wordplay and further focuses on the specific methods used by Kantůrek in the translation process. The thesis attempts to provide a comprehensible answer to the issue of joke translation and familiarize the readers with the best methods and tools that can be used for this type of translation work.

Tato bakalářská práce analyzuje nástroje a metody, které Jan Kantůrek, jeden z nejznámějších českých překladatelů, použil při překladu vtipů a slovních hříček v prvním románu ze série Discworld sira Terryho Pratchetta, Barva kouzel. Hlavním cílem práce je prozkoumat překlad pana Kantůrka a srovnat podobnosti a rozdíly mezi ním a originálním textem. Práce je rozdělena do dvou hlavních částí. Teoretická část práce seznamuje čtenáře s Janem Kantůrkem i Terrym Pratchettem a zároveň poskytuje vhled do světa Discworldu. Dále popisuje lexikální a kulturní význam a funkci vtipů v souladu s pracemi D. Delabastity, M. Baker a D. Chiaro. Analytická část práce pak uvádí příklady vtipů a slovních hříček a dále se zaměřuje na konkrétní metody, které Jan Kantůrek při překladu použil. Hlavním záměrem práce je podat srozumitelnou odpověď na otázku překladu vtipů a seznámit čtenáře s nejlepšími metodami a nástroji, které lze pro tento typ překladatelské práce použít.
