Security aspects of climate change in Europe.

Abstract:

Bc. ŠUGÁROVÁ, Barbora. Security aspects of climate change in Europe. [Master’s Dissertation] University College Prague – College of International Relations and Institute of Hospitality Management and Economics Ltd. Bratislava: 2023. 68 pp. In the context of international relations, climate change is a hot topic. The aim of the thesis is to define the impacts of climate change risks on the security of the European Union states, focusing on food security and water resources, and to examine the impact of the threat of climate change on individual action and thinking. In order to fulfil these objectives, several basic scientific methods such as analytical-synthetic, inductive-deductive and logical-historical set of methods have been used in the thesis.The supporting method of the thesis is the quantitative research method using a questionnaire in the survey part of the thesis. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the definition of the basic concepts of the studied issue such as national security, weather, climate and global warming. At the same time, the correlation between state security and climate change is defined. The second chapter of the thesis deals with EU policies for climate protection and avoiding the negative impacts of climate change. European environmental policy has undergone a historical evolution and currently climate change legislation is one of the most stringent in the world. The purpose of the European Green Deal is to set the EU on a path of green transformation with the ultimate goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. The third chapter of the thesis deals with the security aspect of climate change in Europe, focusing on food security and water resources. The final chapter of the thesis explores the impact of climate change on individual action and thinking using a quantitative method. The thesis authors compare the findings of the questionnaire survey with those of other authors. The thesis should contribute to a better understanding of the impacts of climate change on food security and water resources in Europe. The thesis also explores how individuals perceive the risk of climate change impacts.

Bc. ŠUGÁROVÁ, Barbora. Bezpečnostné aspekty klimatických zmien v Európe. [Diplomová práca] University College Prague – Vysoká škola mezinárodních vztahů a Vysoká škola hotelová a ekonomická s.r.o. Bratislava: 2023. 68 str. V kontexte medzinárodných vzťahov sú klimatické zmeny aktuálnou témou. Cieľom diplomovej práce je na základe analýzy definovať dopady rizík klimatických zmien na bezpečnosť štátov Európskej únie so zameraním sa na potravinovú bezpečnosť a vodné zdroje, a tiež preskúmať vplyv hrozby klimatických zmien na konanie a myslenie jednotlivca. Za účelom naplnenia týchto cieľov, boli v diplomovej práci využité viaceré základné vedecké metódy ako je analyticko-syntetický, induktívno-deduktívny a logicko-historický súbor metód. Nosnou metódou práce je kvantitatívna metóda prieskumu s využitím dotazníka v prieskumnej časti práce. Prvá časť práce sa venuje definícií základných pojmov skúmanej problematiky ako je bezpečnosť štátu, počasie, klíma a globálne otepľovanie. Zároveň je definovaná súvzťažnosť medzi bezpečnosťou štátu a klimatickými zmenami. Druhá kapitola práce sa zaoberá politikami EÚ na ochranu klímy a zamedzenie negatívnych dopadov klimatických zmien. Európska environmentálna politika prešla historickým vývojom a v súčasnosti legislatíva v oblasti klimatickej zmeny patrí medzi najprísnejšie na svete. Účelom Európskej zelenej dohody je nasmerovať EÚ na cestu zelenej transformácie s konečným cieľom dosiahnuť do roku 2050 klimatickú neutralitu. Tretia kapitola diplomovej práce sa zaoberá bezpečnostným aspektom klimatických zmien v Európe so zameraním sa na potravinovú bezpečnosť a vodné zdroje. Záverečná kapitola diplomovej práce skúma kvantitatívnou metódou zisťovanie vplyvu klimatických zmien na konanie a myslenie jednotlivca. Zistenia dotaznikového prieskumu autori práce porovnávajú so zisteniami iných autorov. Práca by mala prispieť k lepšiemu pochopeniu dopadov klimatických zmien na potravinovú bezpečnosť a vodné zdroje v Európe. Práca tiež skúma ako riziko dopadu klimatických zmien vnímajú jednotlivci.
