Army health service during American Civil War and its specifics in the context of 19th century

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou vojenského zdravotnictví během občanské války v USA. Autor tak činí se snahou o proniknutí do každodennosti účastníků tohoto konfliktu, avšak zároveň i s úsilím o značné kontextuální přesahy, a to jak vzhledem k jiným válečným konfliktům 19. století, tak vzhledem k vývoji lékařské vědy a samotné americké společnosti vůbec. Právě kontextuální poznatky umožňují pochopit jistá specifika, jež lze úrovni a proměnám vojenského zdravotnictví během války Severu proti Jihu připsat. Autor nastiňuje vývoj medicíny a vojenského zdravotnictví do 60. let 19. století a způsob organizace a nejvýznamnější reformy v unionistické a konfederační armádě v letech 1861-1865. Popisuje všední život vojáků v táborech i v průběhu tažení s důrazem na faktory, které nejvýrazněji ovlivňovaly jejich zdravotní stav, jako je zásobování, způsob ubytování, hygiena atd. Vzhledem k obrovským bojovým ztrátám v občanské válce v USA je zvláštní prostor věnován také soudobé vojenské taktice. Následující kapitola se zabývá prací vojenských zdravotníků na bitevním poli tedy především transportem raněných a polní chirurgií. Poté následuje výklad o životě ve stálých nemocnicích. Poslední kapitoly práce jsou směřovány nejšířeji, do oblasti celospolečenských jevů. Je v nich přiblížen negativní přístup k vojákům odlišné národnosti a rasy, stále intenzivněji se projevující úloha žen v medicíně a vojenském zdravotnictví, a význam soudobé americké společnosti pro reformní proces ve vojenském zdravotnictví ve sledovaném období. Právě existence aktivní občanské společnosti sehrála v tomto směru společně s uvědomělými jedinci stěžejní úlohu.

Abstract:

This paper deals with the issue of army medical service and health care during the American Civil War. The author attempts to analyze everydayness of participants of the conflict, together with aspiration to significant contextual overlaps to both other military conflicts of the 19th century and the development of medicine or of the American society in general. It is the contextual knowledge that allows us to understand certain specificity which is ascribed to the level and the development of military health service during the American Civil War. The author outlines the development of medicine and military health service until the 1860s and organization and the most important reforms in the Union and Confederation armies between 1861 and 1865. Everyday life of soldiers in camps as well as during campaigns is described with focus on factors that most substantially influenced their health, like logistics, cantonment, sanitation etc. Particular attention is paid due to immense mortality within the Civil War to generalship of the day. Following chapter inquires into the work of military medics on the battlefield i.e. mainly transportation of the wounded and field surgery. A description of life in General hospitals follows. Last chapters are conceived the most widely, directed at societal phenomena. They present the negative attitude to soldiers of different nationality and race, the progressive trend of female participation in medicine and military health care and the importance of the American society of the day for the reformatory process in military health care. It was the existence of active civic-minded society together with enlightened individuals that played a key role in this matter.
