The Angry Young Men and Their Decade in the 1950s in Britain

Anotace:

Hlavním tématem této bakalářské práce je hnutí tzv. rozhněvaných mladých mužů, které vzniklo na počátku 50. let ve Velké Británii. Rozhněvaní mladí muži vyjadřovali ve svých dílech nesouhlas s poválečnou situací, předsudky vyšších vrstev, vývojem literatury i s programem tzv. státu blahobytu (the Welfare State). Mezi nejvýznamější autory toho hnutí patří Kingsley Amis, John Braine a John Osborne, jejichž díla ovlivnila rozvoj literatury nadcházejících let. Ve své práci chci nastínit původ hněvu a povahové rysy hlavních hrdinů novel Místo nahoře (Room at the Top) a Šťastný Jim (Lucky Jim) a dramatu Ohlédni se v hněvu (Look Back In Anger) od zmíněných autorů. V závěrečné časti chci porovnat jejich přístupy k životu a šance na dosažení svých cílů.

Abstract:

The main theme of this Bachelor Thesis is the movement of the Angry Young Men which emerged in the 1950s in Great Britain. The Angry Young Men expressed in their works the disagreement with the post-war situation, prejudices of the upper-class, with the development of the literature and with the programme of the Welfare State. Among the most famous authors are ranked Kingsley Amis, John Braine and John Osborne, whose works influenced the development of the literature of the following years. In my thesis I want to outline the cause of the anger and characteristic features of the main heroes of the novels Room at the Top and Lucky Jim and of the drama Look Back In Anger by the above mentioned authors. In the final part of the thesis I am going to compare their attitudes to life and chances of attaining their goals.
