The Question of Time in Jorge Luis Borges’ Work

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá koncepcemi času, jež se objevují v rozsáhlém díle argentinského spisovatele a filozofa Jorge Luis Borgese a jeho různými aspekty, zejména plynutím času, současným okamžikem, věčností či nesmrtelností. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována lidské paměti jako prostředku našeho „sebevnímání“ v čase a jedné ze základních podmínek lidské identity. Záměrem práce je shrnutí teorií a zároveň rozšířený pohled na problematiku času v myšlenkovém světě spisovatele, poukázání na paralely s jinými filozofickými názory a snaha o dialog se současnými myšlenkovými koncepcemi v umění, kultuře a filozofii.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the conceptions of time that can be found in the wide work of the Argentinean author and philosopher Jorge Luis Borges. It also deals with its various aspects, particularly with the lapse of time, the present moment, eternity and immortality. A special attention is paid to the human memory as an instrument of our “self-perception” in time and as one of the basic conditions of human identity. The aims of this thesis are: to summarise the theories, a wider look at the question of time in the author’s train of thought, to refer to the parallels with other philosophical theories and an effort to open a dialogue with the contemporary intellectual conceptions of fine arts, culture and philosophy.
