Neglect Syndrome and Possibilities of Occupational Therapy

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje problematice neglect syndromu z pohledu ergoterapeuta. Je orientována na dospělé pacienty po traumatu mozku různé etiologie. Cílem závěrečné práce je sumarizace aktuálních vědeckých poznatků z hlediska evidence-based medicine. Úvodní část práce popisuje definici neglect syndromu podloženou detailním výčtem rizikových míst jeho možného vzniku a stádii, kterými pacient se syndromem opomíjení prochází. Následující kapitola je věnována klasifikaci tohoto onemocnění. Kvůli komplexnosti postižení je v práci zmíněna souvislost s interhemisferickou inhibicí a dalšími aspekty pojícími se s neglect syndromem. Velká míra pozornosti v hlavní části je věnována diagnostice a následné terapii. V závěru práce je zmíněna problematika opětovného návratu do zaměstnání osob s neglect syndromem. K vyhledání odborné literatury byly použity internetové databáze EBSCO, ProQuest, PubMed, ResearchGate a Medvik. Časový horizont byl stanoven od roku 2017 po rok 2023. V případě dohledávání specifické tématiky byla prováděna doplňující rešerše. Techniky využívané v terapii neglect syndromu přinášejí prokazatelně pozitivní vliv. Efektivita technik byla potvrzena několika autory. Nedostatečně senzitivní hodnocení nejčastěji způsobí nízkou účinnost následné léčby daného typu opomíjení. Mezi limity práce patří také skromný počet evidence-based literatury týkající se opětovného návratu do zaměstnání.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the issue of neglect syndrome from the perspective of an occupational therapist. It is oriented towards adult patients after traumatic brain injury of different etiologies. The aim of the thesis is to summarize the current scientific knowledge from the perspective of evidence-based medicine. The introduction of the thesis describes the definition of the neglect syndrome with detailed list of the high-risk areas where the syndrome could occure. The introduction part also includes stages that the patient with the neglect syndrome goes though. The following chapter focuses on the classification of this syndrome. Due to the complexity of the disability, the connection with interhemispheric inhibition and other aspects related to neglect syndrome are mentioned. The main part of the thesis is dedicated to the diagnosis and subsequent therapy. The thesis concludes with the issue of re-entry into employment of people with neglect syndrome. Online databases EBSCO, ProQuest, PubMed, ResearchGate and Medvik were used to search for the literature. The time frame for the used literature was from 2017 to 2023. For specific topics additional research was done. Techniques used in the therapy of neglect syndrome have been shown to have a positive effect. The effectiveness of these techniques has been confirmed by several authors. An insufficiently sensitive assessment will most often result in low efficacy of subsequent treatment for the type of neglect syndrome. A limitation of the thesis is the lack of evidence-based literature that addresses the issue of re-entry into employment.
