The transmission of intergroup aggression: Prestige, credible displays, and coalitionary signals

Abstract:

Zatímco konvenční přístupy ke studiu vůdčích osobností během meziskupinových konfliktů se soustředí na dominantní jedince (kteří ostatní nutí do agresivního chování) a na jejich nezbytnost během krizí (protože jejich rozhodnost údajně dosahuje potřebných výsledků), tyto přístupy opomíjejí další cesty, které jsou dostupné utrasociálnímu lidskému druhu. Na základě evolučních teorií agrese, kulturního učení, a lidské kooperativní a koaliční psychologie jsem testoval roli prestiže a důvěryhodnost zvyšujících projevů, pomocí kterých lze motivovat meziskupinovou agresi skrze obdiv—bez donucování. Ve čtyřech empirických studiích, které využívají laboratorní a přirozené experimenty, ukazuji že když nepřátelské vztahy mezi skupinami vytvoří poptávku po agresivním chování vůči nepřátelské skupině, lidská psychologie přesměruje vnímání parochiální agrese z dominantní na prestižní, čímž dokáže inspirovat účast na meziskupinové agresi dobrovolně. Rovněž ukazuji, že nákladné signály komunikované během kolektivních rituálů a víra v moralizující bohy ovlivňují reputaci parochiálních agresorů, čímž je dále podpořen vnitřně-skupinový přenos meziskupinové agrese.

Abstract:

While the conventional thinking on leadership during intergroup conflicts focuses on dominant individuals (who coerce others into aggressive behaviors) and on their necessity in moments of crises (as only their decisiveness supposedly achieves what is needed for the good of the group), such approaches leave out other ways that are open for the ultra-social human species. Guided by the evolutionary theories of aggression, cultural learning, and human cooperative and coalitionary psychology, I tested the role of prestige bias and credibility enhancing displays as pathways that motivate intergroup aggression via admiration, sidestepping the pathway of social coercion. In four empirical studies using laboratory and natural experiments, I show that when arising intergroup hostilities create the demand for aggressive action against an enemy group, human psychology reroutes the perception of parochial aggression from dominant to prestigious, inspiring voluntary participation in intergroup aggression. Furthermore, I demonstrate that costly signaling within collective rituals and the belief in moralizing gods influence the reputation of parochial aggressors, supporting the within-group transmission of intergroup aggression.
