Sonification of the urban environment: noise analytical study and interpretation of noise pollution

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on examining the meanings of noise and its subsequent role in the city’s soundscape as the associated noise annoyance, because of the transformation of the urban acoustic environment. The theoretical part discusses the conceptions of noise in different scientific disciplines, looking for the connections and links that exist between these different fields. The practical part then focuses on sonification and the process of data collection and analysis, which is an important part of the sonification process. This section specifically focuses on the potential relationship between noise, noise pollution and air quality within selected locations in Brno. Specific and actual data is processed in MAX/MSP using the API where sonification brings an opportunity to outline or highlight the proportionality of these relationships. One of the aims of this thesis, in addition to exploring the different perspectives of meaning of noise, is to attempt to define sonification as a creative qualitative research tool with the potential to interpret different phenomena and their behavior. Ultimately, the interdisciplinary approach to noise should set a solid foundation for the practical part, highlight adverse or risky conditions of our environment and offer new forms of perception of noise and its interpretation.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa primárne sústredí na hluk a zároveň jeho rolu vo zvukovej krajine mesta. Súvisiace hlukové znečistenie ako dôsledok premeny mestského akustického prostredia zohráva v teoretickej aj praktickej časti tiež podstatnú úlohu. Teoretická časť sa venuje mapovaniu koncepcií hluku v rôznych disciplínach a zároveň sa snaží hľadať prepojenia a súvislosti, ktoré medzi týmito rôznymi oblasťami existujú. Praktická časť sa bude následne snažiť aplikovať aj tieto poznatky, pri skúmaní sonifikácie ako kreatívneho nástroju pre kvalitatívny výskum, s potenciálom interpretovať rôzne javy a ich správanie. Táto časť sa konkrétne zameriava na možný vzťah medzi hlukovým znečistením a kvalitou ovzdušia v rámci vybraných lokalít v Brne. Konkrétne a aktuálne dáta sú pomocou API spracované v programe Max/MSP a práve pomocou sonifikácie môže vzniknúť priestor pre načrtnutie alebo zvýraznenie možných existujúcich súvislostí. Jedným z hlavných cieľov práce je teda, okrem preskúmania rôznych významových rovín hluku, aj zvýraznenie problematiky hlukového znečistenia prostredníctvom sonifikácie ako snahy navrhnúť stratégiu pre prezentovanie dát, ktoré budú dostupné a zrozumiteľné. V konečnom dôsledku by mal takýto interdisciplinárny prístup k hluku upozorniť nielen na riziko vystavovania sa hluku, ale ponúknuť nové spôsoby jeho vnímania a interpretácie.
